Hey guys,

Excited to be receiving my Red Raven in the upcoming weeks :)

I am super happy with the mount being EF as I own a lot of EF mount lenses such as the Leica and Contax glass adapted to EF. Not to mention the awesome Canon L Series 100mm Macro and Canon L series 70-200 IS 2.8. So for what you're paying and the jobs I plan to use this on - The Raven makes perfect sense

So please do not misconstrue my post or question... I know the Raven will not be the camera for all jobs and there is a target market for such a camera. This is why it excites me as I feel this would be the perfect introduction to RED and actually owning a RED. I also know tis camera will have work arounds and considerations

I was just wondering why something like this FotodioX Pro Lens Mount Adapter Arri PL to Canon EF or perhaps another third party version would not work on the Raven if someone were to try an adapt certain PL lenses onto the camera. See link below and images attached

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/995147-REG/fotodiox_ar_pl_eos_p_pro_canon_eos_adapter.html

I am just curious to hear? Would the crop affect it at all or would S16 lenses in PL mount not be well suited then for this?

Keep well,
Rick.

Examining Phil Holland's chart of image sizes.. NO, Super 16mm lenses will not cover. Not like there are many choices in Super 16 lenses anyway.

You may discover that the structure of some PL-Mount lenses protrudes rearwards into the PL-Mount and may baulk on the EF mount.

Awesome - Thanks guys :)

Just keen to chat about this and see

And Yes @Robert Hart you are right. I read online that certain mounts like the CP.2's and some Cooke's are longer based PL mount.

Just interesting to know and looking forward to playing with the Raven soon enough :)

Thank you for this info Jordan :) Appreciate it and checking out the adapter right now

the sensor is just about S35mm so no s16mm lenses wont work, but with an adapter you can use many 35mm zooms. this is the one i have and the only one i would recommend. the seller is in the reduser community and makes things for us, i also have his hasselblad to EF. they are the best adapters made in my opinion.

This ebay site gives a good comprehensive list of PL lenses that are compatible and those that are not.

I would love to re-awaken this discussion. First of all, why is there difficulty in creating a PL to EF adapter mount and second are there newer adapters anyone in the RED user world would recommend for PL to EF mount applications? I'm a Raven owner as well and have lost rentals because the Raven is EF mount only. There are a lot of EF adaptable lens choices out there and I own EF lenses and EF mount adapters, but would still love to have a formidable PL mount to EF adapter in the bag. Raven was touted as a B camera, gimbal body, drone body, etc to shoot alongside the Scarlet Weapon, Weapon, etc. Hard to match glass sometimes due to the EF only option.

This is what I have been looking into recently, trying to mount a 18-200mm Classic Cooke to a Raven.

As far as I found, it depends on the design of the specific PL lens type. While there is room in flange differences to convert, some PL lenses rear elements actually pass past what the rear elements of the EF lenses have. Some PL zooms actually have the rear element move inwards towards sensor through the zoom range.

So the biggest challenge in the conversion is that. It's why the adapter linked above lists specific lenses that have rear elements that do not pass past the mount. Because all EF mount lenses don't have elements passing the mount and are usually aligned with them, or move away through the focus range.

What I also found out in my case of mounting the 18-100mm Cooke, it actually has a mounting system further back past the PL mount that can be changed!
It's called a Universal Mount and goes UM to PL.

Duclos was making them at some point here: https://www.ducloslenses.com/products/universal-canon-ef-mount

I think the lens does need to be calibrated differently to make the back focus work?

I guess the other major thing here is PL mount is designed to hold really really heavy lenses right, converting a heavy PL lens to a EF mount which would have a weight limit? Could cause damage to the mounts without the right studio support. Having Raven EF only and the lightest of the bodies is to keep the system light for specific use. So the only real way to open up the PL glass options is to upgrade to Scarlet which changes mounts on the body.

Plenty of new cinema lenses are coming out in different mounts and some people might get some ideas for us on opening this further perhaps, I am sure this demand will grow.

Hopefully this helps you dude! Apologies if I am wrong/missing something, I am a learner as well. :)

Any specific brands this is true for?
