It looks like PJ will be directing the 2 Hobbots films after all, even so MGM has been having some serious Troubles, looks like a new Merge, with LionsGate and obviously New Line Cinema, will at last be making a deal with PJ to Direct this two films, and since I absolutely LOVED the LOTR Trilogy, I can not express how happy I am about this, now lets hope that He shoots Epic and since they are already discussing S3D, will make perfect sense to combine two Epic-X and the new ET rig!!:emote_popcorn:

It would be fantastic to see these shot on Epic!

We knew it would happen. Especially after del Toro bowed out. Funding is always
difficult..but in this economice environment it seems it was only possible to do it
with Peter Jackson as director. As with these films..his touch is a sure thing.

That is all.

Though I'm disapointed Guillermo Del Toro had to bow out as he would have given the project a more classical whimsy that would have aesthetically established the films as happening before LOTR, I'm glad it seems to be moving forward. Now we just need MGM to put out some more Bond films. The last two were the first 007 fare I've actually really enjoyed.

I was looking forward to Del Toro's Hobbit. But I would welcome PJ stepping up - at this stage, he would seem like the best candidate, as he has been working on the project alongside Del Toro.

And, yes, it could be a major, major breakthrough for RED. We know PJ loves the One and can't wait for the Epic. If they are doing it in 3D, Epic 3D sounds like a no-brainer, really.

The only issue could be rendering all the CGI at 5Kx2, but I am sure the GPUs are making major inroads. Apparently Avatar was rendered 25 times faster on the GPUs than on the CPUs.

Awesome news! I hope Serkis still plays Gollum! He rocked!

Erk - LOTR left me absolutely cold.

Not looking forward to more Peter Jackson treatments of Tolkien's material.

LOL, I can assure you that you are in the minority with this stance. Only the greatest films of all time. However, I felt the same way about Titanic and Avatar, the highest grossing films of all time= erk. Go figure.

Bit cold how? Explain here please. thanks

I can see where Charles is coming from, it would have been really good to see the Hobbit films helmed by del Toro, resulting in what I imagine to be darker more esoteric set of films.

I hope (and in a sense trust) Peter will be able to adapt and breath fresh air into the films though.

Although I have found it much easier over the last few years to enjoy movies without looking behind the curtain, I have to think back to something a professor told me one time.

"If you want to truly enjoy the magic of movies, you must be entirely oblivious to the process by which it was created. You should never know how the magician achieves their trickery."

In other words, becoming a filmmaker or having an acute understanding of how movies are made, even knowing the people involved in making them clouds our perception of movies and makes it difficult to watch with open eyes.

I guess the reason I'm bringing this up is that it's interesting to see all of this behind the scenes news about the films before they are made. Not only are we standing behind the "the curtain", we're practically standing in the home/office of the creators. I sometimes long for the days of being oblivious. :-)

I have a special abilty in this area Steve.. When I go into a movie, I lose all Knowlege of film making and become a happy idiot! It allows me to enjoy most everything (I LOVED "How to Train Your Dragon, saw it three times!)

If course my wife would tell you that I remain in this "Stupid" state long after I leave the theatre.

although PJ's trilogy was quite an achievement, it would be nice to see a tonal shift in the hobbit pics. I would like to see an out of the box choice on direction. It seems lately, PJ's actor direction has been a bit too on the nose for my taste (overly earnest). Get someone to dig a little deeper and direct the subtext instead. Alfonso Cuaron for instance...or go balsy and put David Lynch in there (half joking).

Haha, that reminds me, Lucas offered Return of the Jedi to Lynch. There's a video on Youtube where he recalls the incident. Cuaron could be a good choice.

Guillermo Del Toro has done a lot of work though on the script and preproduction. Hopefully he has left his mark and can continue to contribute.
I always thought that this was to be Peter Jacksons baby and it seems he can't escape it.
I'm glad to see this project moving ahead out of the legal, financial morass it's been in. I'm looking forward to seeing an incredible experience of a very well loved book.
