  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If I had a pix 240 I'd test myself, however has anyone tried to resize the sdi output via a tv logic monitor to avoid the black bar issue? ie apply a 6% resize to the output from the tv logic? I am looking for a short term solution until the problem is resolved by Red.

Guess I would have to wonder what sort of beating the signal would take in the re-route? Not an issue if its for reference only I suppose...
And what happens to the record-trigger flag the 240 normally receives from the RED? does that make it thru to roll? Time code pairing?
Sorry - haven't tried this, just wondering about other issues.

Why not just edit as usual with the black bars. Then when finished, crop and scale during export. You may have more control over the quality of the scaling that way.

That is the obvious answer, however everyone has their own agenda for wanting something to work or not. In this case, post say that a 6% scale up would not be acceptable to the editors therefore we should not consider a pix or any other offboard recording.

As an update to my post, I have tested using the SDI in/out on the TV logic and it does not appear to make any difference to the black bars. I have tried using the HDMI to scale without success so far.

Even though it is not necessarily Sound Devices problem, would it be impossible for them to incorporate a scaling function withing the settings ? The TV logic can resize the image which is where my original question arose from.

I am hoping regardless that Red announce a new firmware build at or before NAB with this being one of the fixes (Along with 4k & 5k 16:9)

I managed to get hold of a PIX to test. Unfortunately the metadata & Start stop flags don't appear to carry through to the PIX when fed through the TV logic, using the Logic as the scaler (via HDMI converting to SDI). About all I can do is set the logic to overscan which appears to fill the frame but not done in a scientific manner yet, comparing like with like.

The results would be no different if not worse than doing this in editorial. So if your editor tells you its not acceptable, he is going to be less satisfied with what you are attempting to do.
The only acceptable resolution is for Red to update the FW. Asking SD to scale to fix this is not a solution

Thanks Greg. That's what I was trying to say. No matter what, anything scaled is not going to look as a proper 1080 feed.
