PIX 240 - Is there a resolution that doesn't have black bars on?

I have been told that not all resolutions out of the EPIC create the black bar issue with the PIX 240. Can anyone advise if this is correct, which resolutions alleviate the problem.

I know there has been a lot of discussion on here about the issue, but I can't say I've seen anyone posting the answer to the above.

Thanks in advance

Well, you can have resolutions with letterbox only…

I've seen the letterbox version, however it will be an issue for post if they have to scale everything, even if it is only a couple of percent

Lots of people have been complaining already and we all hope RED is going to fix it in a future firmware.

4K (not HD) is the closest with just a 7% increase needed, top and bottom only.
Close but not close enough. Not accetable for some clients. Hopefully this can eventually be solved. Would open up more options for dealing with fast turnarounds.

There has been discussion that the next firmware upgrade will include full raster 1080. Not sure where this stands. NAB will have some of the answers if not sooner.

That's the problem though. Most of the information we have is supposition, it would be good to get some definitive answer as to
whether it is likely to be addressed imminently. It is likely to be a deal breaker on the next job.

without the 1080 borderless output the pix 240 is a "nice to have" for certain jobs but certainly not a go to tool.

I am really hoping this gets fixed soon, needed very badly for the quick turn around folks

does the Atomos Samurai also crop?
Unless they manage to build a scaling algorithm into the Samurai to accommodate that format, then it will be the same as the PIX. They are just taking what RED is giving them down the SDI pipe.

If this was fixed, the camera would be viable for live broadcasting that conforms to the same HDTV (aspect) standard as the rest of the planet. (without the dreaded 8% up- scaling)

Additional market share? Sell more Epics? Seems like an identifiable financial incentive to offer a full frame, 16 x 9, clean feed.

I would be very interested in buying a 2nd Epic package if the camera output a clean feed that wasn't letterboxed.

you will not get an answer...until there is one

A "We're working on it and **hope** to have it ready for the next build" would be nice, with the usual caveat "Everything in life changes" which we all understand. If there was an indication that it is being dealt with, then that is better than nothing in my book.

I just want 16:9 formats that don't suck (4K HD is way too much lens cropping for my taste and does not resemble academy close enough) I understand that the Scarlet can't hack it, but I sorely miss the old Red 4K 16:9, and would love a 5K 16:9. I agree that 2:1 looks great and "should be the future", but I must deliver jobs in the present, and my clients want 16:9.

I just want to fully use my LCD to see the frame as it will end up in 16:9 - that would eb even better than a true 5K 16:9 format - a "dumb 16:9 preview" if you will, with extra pixels recorded for re-frames if/when needed.

I have zero interest in using an external recorder - I frankly can't even fathom why anyone would need that when editing in Premiere is so easy a transition from Final Cut or avid, and when a Rocket costs so little, (which you don;t even really need with Premiere, but I digress).
