  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pirates of the Caribbean 4

At Disneyland this week, they closed down basically everything on the river and "Tom Sawyer's Island." They are setting up a massive seating area for the "world premiere of Pirates 4", closing down the park early on Saturday at 5:30. It's a by invitation only event...I wonder if Jim and crew got a few invites. Without our very own "Captain Jim", Pirates 4 wouldn't be what it is!

They actually closed the river on the 25th to start setting up. Pretty massive undertaking. And you could buy tickets, they just went pretty fast and cost 1k (to be donated to charity).

If you're in Disneyland, though, check out the pirates sneak peak - they are showing a clip from the movie with two 4k Sony projectors. It looks awesome!

Does that mean they did a 4k finish of the film?

No. It's probably because using two projectors is the only current way to get a bright enough stereoscopic image to be projected in a large venue with ambient light in it.

Using two projectors will only give you a roughly 20% boost. Simply using two 20k ansi-lumens projectors (for example) will not give you 40k. I could be wrong but that's what we work on when doing live IMAG.

They had what looked like two of these suckers with polarizers in front

If they mastered in 2k they would have had two 2k projectors. Shooting 4k then Downresing to 2k then upresing for projection wouldn't make much sense. I'm guessing they mastered in 4k.

It's a long and winding road from camera to screen.

Also it would make sense if the 4k projectors had a smaller dot-pitch, better color and darker blacks than the older 2k models. I don't like 2k projectors largely due to aliasing. It wouldn't be any sharper on a 4k projector but the 2k would at least be smoother.

Yeaaah.... sorry, but projector upresing happens all the time on live gigs. Very, very common. Not necessarily what happened here, but your theory is highly speculative.

The Sony projectors can only show 2x 2K for 3D in a "over Under" system. So this is only 2K even when using two projectors.

It also means each projector wastes 60% of it's light output in non-projected area. And that's BEFORE the 3d polarization light loss.

Why use one projector showing an over/under 3D set of images?
Why not use two projectors, split the 3D signal with the left eye going to one projector polarized for that eye, and the right signal going to the other projector polarized for the right eye.
That way you get full resolution with only the polarizer light loss.

I don't get it. If they are using 2 projectors, why show the images for the two eyes in one projector? Why is the 2nd for? Are they projecting twice the image for every eye?

Indulge me in my ignorance.

As mentioned earlier, projector stacking in live events is a common way to increase screen brightness. In outdoor venues there is considerable competition from ambient light. Using more than one projector adds approximately 20% extra light output. I don't know the specifics of the Pirates preview but I don't think it was done for any 3D reasons, more to get an acceptable projection outdoors.
