  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picked up Epic-M on Monday

No.

Frankly your question aggravates me.

If you are asking that question ... then maybe you never needed an Epic in the first place.

Epic M is a far superior camera to the Scarlet X.

In analyzing the Scarlet announcements for myself I realized that there are things Scarlet can't do that are important to the way I want to tell stories moving forward.

A simple example is that I want to manipulate time. With 5K at 120fps, I can do that on Epic without compromising my images.

With Scarlet, I have to shift down to 1K, a touch less than 720p, in order to get the same frame rate.

With Epic I can use HDRx as a practical image making tool for narrative film. I have stories I want to tell in open spaces with wide dynamic ranges. I want to move freely from interiors to exteriors while maintaining my look.

It's a lot easier and cheaper to tote around the extra data management tools and media I need than it is to drag a few tractor trailers worth of grip and electric around the world.

Now, if you can't see that ... well maybe you shouldn't have bought an Epic. Maybe you should have held out a bit for a Scarlet.

The answer for me is clear however ... I need an Epic.

Scarlet is 30% of the cost of Epic, but only capable of the most boring and ordinary parts of my vision - stuff I can do with a 7D. (Yes, at 1080p with the potential for moire ... I can deal )

Scarlet is so much better than the 7D I shoot most often today ... but its not good enough to really answer my vision.

I'll crunch some numbers tomorrow, try and determine if Scarlet makes sense as a stepping stone to Epic.

See, I just can't afford an Epic. I simply don't have the money.

That's why your question aggravates me. It just kills me that you can afford an Epic M, but don't have the vision to see what it can do. I'm desperate for that camera - and have to find ways to step up crawling little by little.

Want to trade?

I'd like to be able to afford the Epic M and keep my vision, you can be barely able to afford the Scarlet and keep your vision - we may both be happier.

Right there with you Alexander. Scarlet needs high fps in a useable resolution. 1024x540 is kind of a joke.

(ohh wow that was a mean one sorry red)

Thanks for the info! I'm just starting out as an Epic-M owner so, as far as I'm concerned, there are no stupid questions. Don't be aggravated just be excited that you could enlighten a fellow film maker (story teller). Thanks Red and Reduser.net.

I think HDRX option is there in SCARLET also....

Yeah sure ... at 12 frames per second.

What am I supposed to do with 12fps? Shoot the chase sequence in Slumdog for the rest of my life?

Yeah sure ... at 12 frames per second.

Well I missed it in the specs....I think in near future you can upgrade your SCARLET X into an EPIC by purchasing sofware upgrades...

Harcharan

Scarlet functionality may upgrade overtime with firmware upgrades - but it will never be the case that it is equal to Epic through a software upgrade. The difference between Scarlet and Epic is not merely a software one - it is a hardware one. Scarlet is simply not able to cope with the same data throughput as EPIC.

I just picked up my Epic-M on Monday and I went to the Scarlet unveiling tonight. Did I just throw $32,000 down the drain?????

I guess it depends on what you create with it, eh? ;)
The ability to shoot 1-120fps in 5k alone is pretty phenomenal in my opinion. If you still feel like you threw away 32k, you can donate it to a good cause... *cough* like me.

This is incorrect information.

Reading the announcement thread you can read that they used a less powerful aisc spin for the Scarlett processing. It would mean hardware and software to make a scarlet X an EPIC.

Let's get some clarity here.

It's a 12 frame Burst at 5k FF. that means on record the camera records 12 frames then stops recording. Not that it records 12 frames per second. Theoretically you should be able to shoot 5k timelapse sequences at 5k.

5k burst mode is there for stills. I imagine it's there to attract photographers more than film makers.

I missed that!

Which makes any talk of 5K even more useless for my purposes.

Nope ... the more I know about Scarlet, the more I am convinced that Epic is the way to go.

David already said this, I just want to back him up.

There is different hardware in the Scarlet than the Epic.

You are not going to get notably better performance with just software upgrades. That said, Jannard wrote that they were going to try to work out a way to do HDRx at 4K 25fps ... which would imply 4K 50fps is a possibility.

I'm skeptical. I think Red understands that is important ... but at the same time you have to remember that the Scarlet is a system built on components that failed the Epic program, in a chassis that was never meant for top end performance.

There is an option to upgrade Scarlet to a Scarlet Dragon ... but its a major rebuild of the camera, and its not available until late 2012 at the earliest. And you will pay for that.

RED One MX= Scarlet, EPIC- new camera with biger res, lees compresion and HDRX ( i would be not too exited about that as it is not so easy to use)- at least i try to bilive on it very hard:)

The only question is , if for last 3 years TONS of good big budget movies where made on RED ONE MX ( social network included) Does ours customers pay for extra quality???
Well, in my opninion it will be very hard to be competitive. My be in hollywood not, but in the places where money does matter, sometimes is crutial, sometimes they use canons...
I think the difference should be 10 k, not 32 k.
Im happy as i own 2x stage 2 epics, but scarlet will hit the market, who knows what will happen...
