I am very used now to using the slow motion (120 fps in crappy compression) in my Sony HDV Z7, in the following way:

I wait for something good to happen, wait three seconds and press the Rec button. The camera has buffered the last three seconds before I pressed the button and then "renders" it into 12 seconds of very nice slowmo footage.

I find this a very useful way of shooting sometimes in documentary work, specially when nothing happens for a long time and suddenly it does. Of course, three seconds is too little.

My question to the Red team: could something like this be available for Epic and/or Scarlet?

Would anybody else benefit from this?

A petition? Really?

"(n.) A formal written request addressed to an official person, or to an organized body, having power to grant it;"

I can re-edit the heading if you can suggest the right phrasing, after all, english is not my mother tongue

Request would be more appropriate :smile5:

Petition is a very formal 'request' that, in normal terms, is used to get an Organisation or Authority who won't/doesn't want to listen, to take note... ie the whole explosion with FCPX has ended with petitions to try and make Apple listen.

RED isn't like others in this respect as they engage with their users on a deeper level... so what you're really asking for is a feature request or 'is it possible' to have this function added etc.

a "petition", in the united states, is typically used when something has either been taken away or denied, and a group of people feel the need to gather strength in numbers to overrule a decision. it carries a negative connotation in most people's mind, and is usually not a polite thing to do.

of course the word has a much more broad definition and meaning, but when it starts involving more than a few people, it starts to seem like a formal petition.

i don't think you meant anything by it, so i think "request" or "feature request" might be a more accurate way of communicating that.

on the other hand, i'm not exactly sure what you're asking for. the cameras do shoot slow motion. have you ever used a red one? the new cameras will be even better at high frame rates, without the need for pre-buffering. they can sustain high rates, but also have "burst" modes that will record even a little bit higher for a limited amount of time.

This feature is available on the Red One now, but without the crappy compression, and you can do it for longer than 3 seconds. 60 fps in 3k, 100fps in 2k. Just turn on preroll. I expect we'll see it in an Epic build soon.

Thanks David, that clears up the panorama for me, surely Epic will continue on what Red One has achieved. Usually I stay for long periods of time waiting for the right moment while thinking "How will I be able to achieve this with my future Epic, will I have to spend endless minutes rolling the camera?"

oh, so you don't actually roll until after something has happened? but it's stored internally? that's pretty cool...

Yes, it's buffering a certain amount of seconds, when you hit Rec, it records "backwards"...very useful for shooting the attack of snakes, they usually stay very quiet for long periods, and then lash fowards at lightning speed, count in your mind "one, two...and" hit the Rec button

It is cool. Red is not the only camera that does a pre-roll or pre-record mode. It's a great feature for nature stuff of all kinds. I shot this little thing for my granddaughters. It's almost all shot using preroll: http://www.vimeo.com/25637417

Adding the "preroll" feature to Epic would be welcome here.

Exactly....I use for doc type of work, usually just feeling the image until that something special happens. It's like viewing rushes (that will never be recorded), and suddenly feeling that editor's moment "there !" and you take it. Very nice video by the way, did you use your Red One? How long is the pre-roll?

Nice piece, perfect demo of prerecord. IMHO it is an essential feature of a modern professional digital motion picture camera, particularly for documentary work.

My late 90s Ikegami Editcam had prerecord Recording to laptop hard drives - settable from 3 to 300 seconds. It is just constantly buffering and all you are doing with the record button is telling it to save the buffer (and keep recording if you want). TiVo has always had this as well - it has a half hour buffer.

A little off and not sure about the camera you own but the nx5u actually records half the resolution when shooting slomo and looks like total shit. To add to the shit try and zoom in and shit on shit.

Hey Enrique,

Your use of "petition" is correct, though the word is a bit archaic outside of the sense that others have suggested in this thread. (i.e. your English seems pretty good to me!) ;-)

The "pre-roll" is great for lots of things. Another example is interviews of people who say interesting stuff "between takes," and the producer says: "Did you get that?"

Yes, this was shot on my Red One. I don't remember the the range of adjustment of the preroll, but for this stuff i was using 30 seconds. That way I didn't have to move too quickly to tell the camera to save the buffer and keep recording. Didn't want to scare the birds.

I think it would be safe to assume that at some point this feature will be added to Epic. Thanks for your ideas, I understand now that a "petition" won't be really necessary!
