  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Petition for 4.5K

If I recall, RED One 4.5K was said to be something like 4480 pixels wide and not the full 4520. That makes it roughly 4480x1866. And that's less pixels/frame than 4K 16:9.

I may be wrong, though... Or things may have changed...

I was relating the performance increase to 4k 2.40:1, not 4k 16:9.

I actually posted this before I read your post, Mark. :usd: I was just commenting on what the specs of the 4.5K mode were.

That would be correct. Yes 4.5K is still on our to do list, however at the moment we are investigating some issues such as HDMI compatibility (hence Brent's comment)

More later ...

Thanks, Stuart, for responding.
Gotta say HDMI issues wouldn't stop me from using it. Are the other reasons for delay more significant?

JIM wanted us to be PROTECTED in 2.40:1 framing!!

Good news, HDMI being fixed and 4.5K in 2.40;1 still on!!
Because today i shoot in 2.40:1 in 16:9 and the editor can still change my frame in up and down position.
When its fixed in a real 1.2.40 i'm sure nowbody can change the framing as i made it. Thats the hole idee from Jim to protect us as DoP's

What if you were framing a shot on set, and there's a potted plant in the background that looks like it's coming out of the actor's head. You choose to move the pot eight inches to the right, but you discover it's been bolted to the ground to protect the production designer's intent. Pretty annoying right?

A good choice therefore is 4K 2:1. A significantly smaller frame size than 16:9, but still allows some reframing in post.
