  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Perfect Epic scratch track mic?...

Be warned that what you get with a $99 mic is the sound of a cheap mic. "Reference" or not, it sounds like crap.

I continue to be sad by people who use a $40,000 camera and want to know which under-$100 mic to use with it. This is like buying a Ferrari and saying, "hey, what are the cheapest tires I can buy for it? And anybody have a good recommendation for the cheapest possible gas?" Jesus christ... :nonod:

Is your point directed at me?

A £100 mic sitting next to a dragon fan, on the front of the camera, grabbing a scratch track will be bettered by what in the same position...?.

The DPA mic sitting on the talent fed into a Zaxcom wireless system and the 8060 on the boom fed by a cable into a Nomad will stay put... But neither negate my desire to put something on the front ..

Hi Michael,

have you tried the ERX's timecode and audion feed option. I find it works a treat.

Thank you very much

It would be bettered by a decent mic in the right position. Let me put it to you this way: would you rather use a 2000mm zoom lens to get a close-up of an actor, or would you rather use a 50mm prime lens and bring the camera closer? It's just a question of using the right tool for the job.

I have no problem with people in dangerous documentary or news situations using a shock-mounted shotgun mic on top of the camera, because that's the only way to get sound in run and gun situations. But pretending that a tiny mic sitting by a fan is useful for anything is silly. Even for slate claps, it's not going to be useful if the camera is too far away. Hiring a decent soundman and feeding a wireless feed into the camera works fine. In fact, if you slave the sound recorder and camera together, you don't even have to worry about the claps -- the timecode will sync everything automatically, done correctly. I would still rather have the clap just to confirm sync is perfect. But even PluralEyes works better when it doesn't have to fight tons of noise in finding a clap signal.

I continue to believe it's very sad to use a $99 lav mic strapped on a $40,000 camera, and it just shows the degree of disrespect sound has by many ignorant camera crews. "Good enough" rarely is, in the grand scheme of things.

That would depend on the situation of the scene, and what I wanted the BG / FG to look like. So yes the super long zoom is sometimes the right tool for the job. Luckily most of my shoots are MOS, and I don't have to deal with sound anymore, other than a scratch track where I leave notes to the editor. (and this mic would work perfectly for that)

[Olympus ME 52W] Incredibly light weight (in sound quality too!) - but useful for FCPX software to Sync to.

I am hoping the Weapon up the ante with (half speculation) something built in below the lens mount.

Waiting for some bits to make it work.... I am excited by the possibilities and I am amazed by how forward thinking all the zaxcom stuff is..

I believe there is also some mods to take out the voloume pot and replace is with a Lemo or BNC for TC. I may buy another one and get it moded. Have you used a modded one?

Hi Michael,

I have heard tell that one can do this, but the cost of the split custom cable, being <1/3 of the ERX (minus the mod) just didn't really appeal to me. I have to say that RED and Zaxcom worked well together to allow the 23.98 TC issue that was present a bit (no pun intended) ago to synch up just fine. If you want to try that and need a cable source, PM me. Be sure to set output to 2.0 volts and have current camera firmware and 1.33 for the ERX.

Thank you very much
