I was thinking about Pentax recently. They are one of the only two DSLR manufacturers which I recommend to people who want DSLRs in 2024. The other being Nikon. (Sony's A mount cameras are used by people who know they want them, and they are actually pretty good). Pentax cameras do have unique features which other DSLRs will probably never have. But otherwise, DSLRs are pretty much obsolete - or are they?
The form factor does allow for some things that mirrorless can't do. And I am not talking about simple stuff like optical viewfinders. I won't say them here because that's not the point of this post. My point is that an old technology can, in some way, have hidden advantages that nobody can conceive. You only see how obvious it is when it happens. I am sure that I am not the only one to think this, both in terms of DSLRs specifically, and technology in general.
I am sure that Pentax has tried to find a way to exploit the DSLR form factor in a way that can put mirrorless in check. But, do they have the guts to do it?
Side-note: Pentax is going to make film cameras again. That's one technology I regret not using, but it's too expensive, given what it does. However, I have a feeling that Pentax did its market research a long time ago, and they are not merely idealists.
