Hi, I want to buy a Peli case to R1 that might be used as hand luggage, I fount that the Peli 1510 and Peli Storm 2500 can be used as hand luggage.

In hand lugage I want to take the R1, viefinder, Lcd, and batteries, other itms may go in a secong buggage in the plane.

Witch one of the peli is better, 1510 or storm 2500?

Should I buy it with a Foam Set or Padded Dividers?

1510:

Storm 2500:

I have the 1510. I can't comment on the Storm, but the Pelican already has the TSA lock holes, where as you'd have to pay for them on the storm in addition to the case (I believe).
I don't use the Pelican for my R1 - but I will take a photo with it for reference, in case that is helpful.

After placing the items in the case (Monitor, 2 x 160s, a 95), ...honestly I think it'll be too tight - even without the baseplate and handle attached. Doesn't leave for much padding in the lid.

Hopefully that gives you something to go on.

Thanks Gareth,

I can Always pic a bigger peli to put everithing and when need, take the R1 body and some more gear and put it on a Backpack to take in hand Luggage...

Wich will be the better peli to put everything on it?

I'm a huge fan of storm cases, I prefer them over pelican, the material seems a bit more rubbery and durable and they feel nicer and more solid in terms of the overal build.

TSA locks....I heard of a case the other day where a photographer had his gear checked in with Pacific Blue and on the luggage belt noticed that the case was empty. so obviously some corrupt luggage handlers with an acces key for the TSA locks got to his gear and the airline refused to take responsibility. Something to consider depending on where you are based and where you are planing to travel. I heard you guys in america pretty much only have TSA locks as option ? I have never used them and refuse to on any of my gear cases, on my last 3 international travels I had no issues with proper padlocks but I understand that you can get into trouble when flygin in america.

I have the 1510 which I use either for my DJ or photography equipment. I would probably not use it for any RED cams, though. as you can see in gareths pic, space is somewhat limited for bigger (and much more expensive) equipment which leaves very little space for the padding, be it the padded dividers or the pluck foam. the wheels on the 1510 are rock hard (no pun intended) which means things can get a little shaky and thus I'd rather have less or smaller equipment inside, just to be on the save side.

I'm a fan of the Storm cases over Pelican because of the latches. Pelican must like Storm cases too since they decided to purchase them a couple years ago. Both are great cases and will serve you well. The main difference are those nice latches that aren't knuckle busters.

And go with the padded dividers, much more useful.

Yah I can concur the storm latches are a bit nicer to deal with. As for padlocks: I use them sometimes, but in the past they've been removed with bolt cutters by the TSA. If they want to get in, they will.

I'm not sure what the exact rules are for batteries on flights but I know that some batteries are restricted and not allowed on flights.

Might change your plans so worth looking into.

the airlines go after watt hours, I think most airlines allow 3 redbricks or any other V Lock type battery as long as they are under 170WH.
any number of redvolts are cool, cause they're much smaller

I use this Swit batteries, they split in two 80w batteries so I don´t have any problems.

Dominic, are you sure they allow three batteries under 170W?

In Europe, some companies allow several (they say unlimited) less than 100W batteries in hand luggage and between 100-and 160W you can take them but you have to tell the company, and they must go with check in luggage.

Well, I can tell you I got stopped in China going out for 150whr batteries. I told them that 190whr were the limit, but they replied "not in China". Had to wait and get a special release form.

I travel quite a bit internationally with all kinds of camera packages. For the RED one, I have used a small regular roll aboard suitcase with a RED One packed in foam I cut to fit it. Not having an extremely hard sided cases didn't matter since I was hand carrying it and it was always in my possession. Upon arrival, I transfered it back into a larger Peli case w/ the accessories for all ground transportation, etc.

regarding batteries. I just spread them around each of my cases, to distribute weight and cause less of an issue regarding regulations. I also keep the documentation from the battery's manufacturer on my computer. Just in case it becomes an issue.

Also regarding TSA locks, there is a crafty work around for using beefier, non-TSA locks. I have heard of some pro photographers using this strategy:

If you have an unloaded firearm that is going into your checked baggage, you must declare it before check-in. Then you must have that piece of luggage pre-screened by TSA, after which you must lock it, using whatever lock you like. This applies to a flare gun as well, so you don't need to actually purchase a weapon. If you are willing to spend an extra hour or so at the airport to have a flare pistol inspected and locked up, it could work.

Don't take this advice solely on my word. If you are interested, I would check out all the regulations and talk to some TSA people before trying this. I have never done it myself, and sounds like a total pain in the ass... but better than a stolen camera I suppose.
