  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PELENG 8mm Fisheye

If it covers the s35 gate on a RED then its projection must be FAR larger than 24mm.

I unfortunately am looking for a lens that vignettes completely on the left and right hand side of frame so I have the full 180° image to work with in post.

I would be immensly grateful if someone could tell me what FOV we get on the RED accross the centre of the frame and down the middle.

This thread has proved to be very interesting.

Have a look at the Sigma 4.5mm fisheye.

That Sigma 4.5mm lens is absolutely PERFECT for my application. As the APS-C sensor is 15.7mm high I will get a bit of cropping top and bottom of frame but thats ok.

Can I put this lens on a RED?

Yes, with the Nikon mount you can. See post here.

I Just received a Peleng lens. Its very good for the money and I don't think you can go wrong with it. The optics look good and well built on the example I have. The focus ring is pretty difficult to operate as its right near the mount and nearly obscured by the PL mount itself. Im told Les Bosher has a modification for this and installs new rings. It certainly will enable shots to be captured that are otherwise would not be possible if more expensive glass were unavailable.

Anyone know if there are any ND filters available for the lens ? I have some of the useless Coloured filters for it that could be converted by inserting ND glass.

That's the ticket, Dave. Best bet is to replace the glass in those little rear filters with some ND material. Sorry, I don't have any recommendations on where to get the right stuff. I have intentions of doing this myself, but just haven't got serious about it yet.

I also picked up an extra set of those rear filters on ebay for about $8. I figured that would be a good investment in case I screw one up or I get lucky and find the right ND material, I could make some more.

Lee make some plastic ND material that would work. I believe the Peleng need a clear glass element in the filter to collimate it properly so if may be this solution is not entirely satisfactory.

Any one know if this is a requirement of the lens and what the glass spec needs to be ?

I somehow didn't get the filter rings with my Peling so I can't speak from experience... but I would imagine it would be possible to just cut discs from Kodak wratten 3x3 in. squares available from any good camera store and designed to be inserted in the optical path.

Lee may make optically transparent filter material as well but I think of Lee (like Rosco) as making ND material designed to go in front of lights etc. and is not necessarily designed for being in the optical path.

The wratten, however, are substantially more expensive (something like $60 though they can be found on ebay for a third that price.)

Let me revive this 11 year old thread!

Did anyone ever figure out a source for rear NDs?

Thanks,
Mike

I'm the guy who originally put PL mounts on these, way back in the 1990's. I had custom NDs and 85 and 85ND filters made for them. Still have some . . .

Hi Doug! Thanks for the quick response. Just sent you a message on Facebook.

I can make filters, but you must supply the filter holders that come with the lens when new. I have ND 0.6 (two stops). Also 85 and 85n6 but I bet nobody wants those.
