  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PELENG 8mm Fisheye

I was thinking less about the price and more about the quality control and the inclusion of the ND filters. It seems that these lenses are a bit like snowflakes and no two are alike... ;)
But people here seem generally happy and Long View and other dealers have managed to control the quality of what they ship so I guess it's largely moot.
And compared to the price of an 8R, or Nikon 8, it's hard to argue if the Peleng has some quirks!
Cheers,
Harry

I received my Peleng a few days ago. It shipped with a note saying that the filters would be coming later.

Bearing in mind that this is a rarely used pretty wacky effect lens, the price/performance ratio is outstanding.

I'm quite pleased with the lens and the delivery.

Good shooting and best regards,

Just got mine as well, same note about the filters arriving later. Doesn't sound like the included filters will be of great use but more the merrier!

As Leo says, this is really an effects lens so I would say the majority of flaws when compared to more expensive lenses can be forgiven.

Fisheyes are fun and at the price who cares. Make sure your first shot is of your doggies nose. It's the best.

There is no doubt that these lenses come from Russia (Minsk...Belarus)!

Belarus is not in Russia, it's a country in Eastern Europe.

I'm going to be picking up a fisheye soon, and I certainly like the sound of this Peleng, but the quality control issue has me worried. Can anyone compare the image quality to the Canon 15mm fisheye? The Canon mount is a definite (I shoot my still work on Canons and am banking heavily on the Birger mount for RED), and I probably don't need a full 180º viewing angle, so is there any reason not to pay a little extra for the "security" of having an official Canon lens?

catnoses and goldfishbowls are also important setup tests.

Heya,

I'm using the Sigma 8mm with a Canon mount on my EOS 1ds Mk III. Great lens! Can't wait to try it on the Birger mount.

I forgot I had a Peleng from a few years ago! I replaced it with the Sigma. The Peleng has a Nikon mount on it so I put it
on the Nikon RED mount and it works great.

Best,

ATF

If you buy the Peleng lens with PL mount we may guarantee you would be fine . Peleng lenses with the PL mount have a special quality control and adjustments in the movie studio by professional engineers.

Has anybody managed to get an ND or Pola on the Peleng? Or is it in the "too hard basket"?

I got my Peleng a few days ago. It comes with 3 rear filters (green, orange, etc...). I'm checking for a way to customize one and change the filter for a ND. Anyone done that yet?

Forget the front filtering... This lens sees backwards!!!

Yeah we've got the useless rear filters!!

We want to adapt this lens for underwater shooting - Anyone had success with an ND for this lens or know the thickness of the glass that comes with it as a have someone teed up who can try replacing it with an ND if he knows what thickness to look for.

C'mon Peleng owners??!! Surely somebody's had success by now??!!

Cheers

PS - Love the Peleng - the only lens I've come across that I would describe as 'fun' to use!

I'm anxious to see what the Peleng does once we get the 4.5K mode!

I've put the Peleng 8mm on an Arri 435 to look through the OVF. It fully covers the S35mm frame in the ground glass. There is some darkening at the corners, but it's pretty slight considering what the lens is and I prefer it to the Nikon / Century 8mm, which will vignette on S35mm. However, those 6mm fisheye lenses out there like the one from Century (the Ninjas have used one a bunch) are just insane.

Doug Underdahl at Long Valley Equipment (www.longvalleyequip.com) kindly converted one of my useless colored Peleng filters to an ND6.
