  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PELENG 8mm Fisheye

I will have 4 more in about a week, $600 each with stainless PL mount, ND .6, and iris fix ring.

Thanks Doug

I'm super interested... thinking a lot... if I go with PL, then is there a way to use it on a Canon Mount? or maybe it's smarter to go with it on Canon mount and use the Birger on the RED to use it with that? any ideas why a PL mount on the Peleng would be better...

or if anyone knows a way to mount a PL on a Canon 40D

thx
mike

I completely forgot to mention about using the peleng. It was used last month on Nick Bartlett's music video for a band called brigade.

You can see the video here: http://www.pixelloft.com/music_videos.htm it's smack bang in the middle of the video and only lasts for an instance.

The peleng was used for the eye hole shot of the guy holding the flowers.

The lens was sharper than expected and we were happy with the results. The guy we had collimate the lens also had positive things to say about it, much to our suprise. He also reckoned it was optically better than the Nikon fisheye.

Manny, that did it for me! I went to the same seller and he gave me a counter-offer of $345, just paid for it. Woohoo!

Woohoo! Here it is :-). This is fun freakin lens. For under $400, no Red should be without one!

Now how can I get some ND back filters for it??

Lol, the footage is insane. Nothing like making a flat wineshelf look like a 180 deg round half-circle :-).

I won't have time for a couple of weekends, but I'd love to make a 'Fun with Peleng' test video.

JUst buy the nikon version and a Nikon to eos mount.

JUst buy the nikon version and a Nikon to eos mount. Cool thing about eos is everything else works on EOS because it has the shortest Flange focal distance so is easy to make physical adapters.

So this last weekend I was on a shoot that was renting my camera and during a break I threw the Peleng on just to show the AC. He absolutely loved it and we were going to show the DP. Well the Director saw it and flipped out 'why didn't you tell me you had a 8mm fisheye??!?!", we then did the very next setup using it. The novelty of Red had worn off a bit after four days of shooting but was back with a vengence when this lens came on. I love it!

in light of the fact that the birger mount may not be pl swappable, i'm might prefer the peleng in canon eos mount. but can you get the filters for the back in eos like you can in PL? don't know anything about it.

The rear filters on the Peleng are unique to that lens, regardless of which mount it is configured with. It is an MC42 mount natively on the lens and is easily converted to PL, Nikon, Canon, etc.. with an adapter.

The Peleng I ordered (same one I've seen a few others here say they ordered) comes with a clear filter and two others. I also found on ebay a guy selling the filters separately and I picked those up too. My plan is to keep the second clear as a spare clear one -- necessary for proper focus. And convert the other 4 filters to NDs or something more useful.

Thanks, Jeff. Are the filters pretty easy to swap out?
BTW. Love your state.... Just spent a week in Crested Butte. Never seen so much snow in my life....

Jeff, how do you convert the others to ND?

I think the eBay guy's onto us. The price keeps going up! The other day he wanted $368 and now he has them at $389 and appears to be getting it.

I might wait until the frenzy wears off and see if the price comes back down.
