Peeping sound on Red Epic Audio

If I put the amplifier and mic up to the maximum value I hear a strong "beeeeeeb" sound. Is this normal?

What are the max values that the internal amplifier can handle without problems?

I leave it at the lowest setting. I suggest a powered mic or an external amplifier/mixer.

Sounds like you are using an unbalanced dynamic mic. IMO the Red Epic audio is unusable with unbalanced mic inputs for anything but a throwaway guide track. The sound you are hearing is likely the electrical interference from the camera fan - it probably changes pitch with fan speed?

Like Bob says, leave the mic input gains at default level or lower, use balanced mic level inputs into the camera, and use external pre-amp/mixer to set levels. Balanced inputs eliminates the fan interference, and external gain avoids using the very noisy camera pre-amps.

I haven't heart it changing pitch with the fan, I will listen some more. I haven't heard this before.

Is there any preamp that you would recommend that is a bit less pricy than the Sound Devices? I mostly thought to use the use for scratch track or for backup.

I'm using the VideoMic Pro Stereo myself. The noise level seems a bit low though and I get this beeping sound if I increase the level of pre amps.
