I'm in the middle of making a PC upgrade. I have about 2k to spend. I was shopping motherboards and my friend insists that there is a big enough difference to warrant paying about $120 more for a motherboard that allows 2 GPUs SLI to run at PCI-e 3.0 2x16 instead of getting the better performing, lower costing motherboard that only allows PCI-e 3.0 at 8/8 with dual GPUs.
Question - when it comes time to process and render out the film/edit/whatever - would I be hurt or notice a huge difference when running two GPU's through PCI-e 3.0 8/8 vs. 16/16? I'm having a hard time finding many recent comparisons. What I've found shows minimal differences if any. I'll only have 4k footage - I believe it doesn't make much difference until you hit 5k, from what I've found online.
I'll be running an i7-4790K chip overclocked to about 4.5GHz with 32GB DDR3 2400 RAM.
I'm looking at the EVGA GTX 970 GPUs until I can afford to pick up the 980s.
