SOLD

Hi Guys,

I have a fellow user who is interested in buying my Scarlet here in Europe.Have many of you sold through PayPal and is it an easy process? He has read that apparently PayPal sometimes flag a large payment as it might look suspicious. We were going to do a bank transfer but I believe that depending on the seller and the buyers bank that both parties incur charges for using this type of service which obviously we would both like to avoid. He mentioned it might be an idea to use Western Union but because I've never used their service before I'm not sure if there are charges involved there also.

Any input appreciated...

Thanks.

I was always warned never to make large online purchases with people you don't know using Western Union, as it's considered a "gift" to send money through it, thus he will never send you the camera, and keep your money.

PayPal do have fees, (I think 3.9% internationally) but realistically, it's not too much. I have never been burned using PayPal in user to user transactions in this forum, or any other. With PayPal, if they don't send the merchandise, you have a path to get your money back. Bank transfers, and Western Union, there isn't.

EDIT: I read that as you buying the camera, my bad. But if you're in honest person, you can do it anyway, and it should all work out. Just buyers "scam warnings" are sellers asking for Western Union only, for example.

Thanks for the reply Adam.Just looked up Western Union and apparently you can't send anything online over €5000 anyway. He is planning on flying to Dublin to pick up the camera so no worries with receiving the goods. My understanding is that the 3.9% fee that PayPal charge is only when your transaction is done with a credit card and not when funds are deposited from your bank account.Just wondering as I said do the flag any payments if they are for a large amount.

I WOULDN'T DO IT THROUGH PAYPAL! For nearly a decade, I never had issues with using paypal but heard lots of horror stories. Up until last February when a customer of ours flagged 2 large transactions they did with us using their credit card back in november. Their credit card company contacted our paypal. Paypal IMMEDIATELY (like a scared f'in rabbit) took whatever money we had in our account and gave it to the customers credit card company - in addition to making our paypal account greatly negative. We provided them documentation to back up the proper sale we did in november but they didn't care to resolve. LUCKILY, our customer told it's credit card company that the flagging was done by mistake and to return the funds back to us. They did - after 4 weeks. But we still did not have the funds. WHY? Because Paypal decided just afterwards to put those funds in some invisible 'holding' for 90 days.

Point I'm trying to make... if you sell your scarlet to the buyer via paypal, they pay you in full with a credit card. Then the buyer MIGHT call it's credit card company a month or two down the road and say they never did those transactions and they are fraud. Paypal will then IMMEDIATELY (just as they do to everyone) pull every single dollar from your account to pay back your buyers credit card company. Then the buyer could possibly ignore your communications... and you'll be left with a negative balance, money owed, and no gear!

The only time paypal covers it's seller is during actual ebay transactions - but even then, their terms and conditions prevail. I would say if it's a local sale, you might be okay with a check/wire transaction at the bank together. If not, I would send camera in to red and complete the sale that way. Shipping will hurt in that scenario I'm sure.

Yeah I'm with Prince on this one for sure. I did a wire transfer for my Epic @ 23k because people vouched for the guy. But yeah Paypal WILL screw you if someone from the credit card company or bank cuts a loud
enuff fart no joke. I sold a Macbook one ebay and listed it for parts or repair the guy got to keep the macbook AND paypal refunded him! STAY AWAY IF YOUR THE SELLER PLEASE. BECAUSE IF HE OPENS A CASE THE ISH WILL
HIT THE FAN I PROMISE YOU THAT. I can go on and on about paypal. If you are however the buyer well then your good to go.

i use paypal all the time...even use it for invoicing now....it's easy and safe for both parties...a couple of things to think about...always ship to the paypal verified addr....ONLY! and always require a signature...if you have and did both, you are protected on your end....
there are always ways to abuse systems...good communication with the buyer/seller is key....also: if the deal is too good to be true (or the buyer all of a sudden wants to pay more and hurry things up).....maybe use your head....

Thanks Paul.As I said he is willing to fly to Ireland to collect the gear as I am the seller so just wanted to see peoples PP experiences with large amounts.
