I received the new Weapon yesterday and just did a quick few tests with it. I noticed some strange patterns in the flare.

There is some lens flare there for sure but the red circles and the grid of green circles are not.

Anyone have any idea what is going on here? Do different OLPFs help with this?

That is “sensor flare” or “OLPF flare” you are seeing. In this case with both red and green elements to the flare, it looks like you’re getting sensor reflection as well as mirroring or ghosting through the OLPF. This happens with all digital cameras in some form or another. In lighting situations like this, you may benefit from some of the ND OLPF options out there, or much better yet using proper filtration and light control in front of your lens — good matte box system, ND and polarizing filters. As well as stopping down, as the aperture closes up the iris can do more to block off-axis light coming in and out of the optical path.

That's exactly whats causing these flares. you probably had no ND and a stop at around 11-22, right? With a stop that skinny, you see everything in focus, including these artifacts. You have to use ND's and a much larger aperture. Doesn't have to be wide open, but I would go 5.6 or wider aperture.

Thanks Jeff, I often shoot flare and hard sources, pulling matte boxes off and losing filters as much as possible. The one thing I did differently, because this was a quick test, is I shot at F22. I'll do another test wide open with filtration and see if it throws the OLPF out of focus enough to turn the pattern into something visually pleasing.

Thanks again for your help.

Phil.

I have been getting a ton of these when I use a 11-24mm on the Movi Pro. I would love to figure out a solution to get ride of them. I also got them, when I was shooting the eclipse(which I was massively filtered).. I was still able to salvage both shots.
