  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Patient Zero

Ted your contagious positive energy is a breath of fresh air in a world which at times seems to feed on negativity. Thank you and your team. Safe travels.

Thanks for including me on there Ted. I was infected by Red just at just the right time. I remember that while I was considering a purchase of an F900 (shuttering to myself), I saw this mysterious one-page website at red.com talking about the development of a completely unrealistic dream camera. Everyone I talked to dismissed it as hype that they had seen fail many times before, but I had been bitten by the bug. I plopped down my reservations for 5 Red One's the first day of NAB, then had my family reserve 10 more for me. As a rental house, I can't imagine where we'd be if I hadn't made that decision. As a DP, I've seen my dreams realized in more ways than I can list.

As I type, I'm in our Bulgarian office taking meeting after meeting, trying to get this part of the world even more infected. I think I've passed the bug on to more than a few people and I'm proud to do it.

so here is my patient zero story.

in 1993 i was part of a team that made a ground breaking 3D film, yes film...

it was Noah Salasnek snowboarding, Johnny Boy Gommes surfing, Dan Osman rock climbing and Tony Hawk Skateboarding. we shot with wide angle 3d lenses made by chris condon. Per Peterson, a very good friend of mine whom i met during that experience went on to shoot hundreds of hours of unreal surf in 3d in the nineties and into the 2000's. In fact Per's footage is what helped launch 3Ality and ReelD, no kidding, it was Per's surf footage that was the only good live action 3D on the original reel that reelD ran around the world looking for money and looking for exhibitors and studios participation, but that is another story for another day.

well in the mid 2000's Per was looking to shoot more and more surf and other sports and he approached many of the "action/extreme sports" companies [i hate that term, but it is all we have] to lobby for access to their athletes. moreover he wanted to help those companies with something they needed, but didn't know they needed, specifically with capturing their athletes in 3D for use later on down the road...like now, where there are a lot of 3d theatres and 3d tv's in homes, and even for gaming as reference.

one of the companies he approached was Oakley and Oakley was very interested, so interested that after one of our meetings, ( I came along as the producer and projection expert in these meetings), they offered up a trip into the store, which is and was inside the oakley facility just around the corner from red HQ. a trip to the store meant, take a shopping cart and walking through the store and grabbing what ever you wanted...and we did to the tune of about 10 pairs of sunglasses and a pair of futuristic oakley slip on shoes.

now, about 5 years before that i was an executive at a start-up internet streaming media company called DEN.NET and one of our chief technology guys had told me a story about installing a Discrete Logic Flame Suite in an SGi box at Oakley HQ, and how forward thinking that company was with their image processing.

so now i have these two facts in the back of my head coupled with the fact that from 2002 to roughly 2006 i am making a big portion of my living as a digital cinema projectionist, going to all of the NATO meetings and Projection and lighting conventions, not to mention NAB and the others. so I am very familiar and confident about 4k at this point, that i purchase the URL HD4k.com, as a placeholder for things to come.

armed with all of this i head to NAB 2006, not knowing or even thinking that any of the above would come to play a big part of my future and my families future. so i start my yearly pilgrimage to NAB in the south hall and within 30 minutes of wandering the floor looking for nothing and everything, i literally stumble upon the RED booth. prior to this moment i had never ever heard of RED other than as the description of one of my favorite colors, my first car was a 1976 RED TR6 we bought brand new in 1976 a few weeks before they stopped making them.

so i walk in the RED booth and at the time i was in the final few months of shooting a feature with a Z1U, so i was poised and ready to take it all to the next level....and there it was, a 4k camera for $17,500....i thought...SEVENTEEN FUCKEN THOUSAND DOLLARS, are you kidding me, knowing that REAL sony hd cameras were 100k+ and they were barely 2k...before someone could show me the prototype or tell me any more facts, i somehow heard that Jim Jannard was involved and that if we put down a deposit we would get some crazy looking piece of metal with Jim's signature on it...

that is when all of what i wrote in paragraphs 1-5 came in handy....i thought, $1,000.00, fuck, Oakley gave me at least $2,000.00 in sunglasses and shoes, and this guy Jim owns a Flame!!! which only high end post houses had and knew how to use...so to recap, i have a 2k+ credit with Oakley and Jim is an innovator and very sophisticated image guy, those two facts i knew and 4k is the future...boom...i whipped out my credit card and handed it to this very hot red head, sorry brent but you know it's true, and before you knew it i had a metal thinger majigger with jim's scribble on it and a receipt for my deposit. the guys i was with thought i was crazy and the rest of the people i saw throughout the day at NAB whom i told about my deposit all told me i was crazy...but in my mind i still had another 1k i could blow and still be ahead in my Oakley/Jannard ledger. (should have put 2 deposits down...damn it)...

well lots of things happened in the next twelve months to me, big life things like babies and houses and moving and making movies....and i literally completely 100% forgot about my 1k deposit. until in april of 2007 i showed up on the NAB south hall floor and witnessed the feeding frenzy at the red booth and a bell went off in my head...didn't i already do this thing...and sure enough when i got home i dug through the boxes in the garage from the move and found my shinny thinger majigger with jim's signature scribble on it and my receipt for #31...next thing i did was go to red.com for the first time and joined reduser. i started reading posts and realized how lucky i was and that is when a big huge light bulb went off in my head and i dreamed up renting my camera to make a little cash. i thought it would be a couple of months till the rental houses get cameras, so i might as well make some cash and try and pay off the camera...well here we are more than 6 years later and i am still as infected as anyone and thank god...

you people at RED changed my life and you know who you are and you know how much i care and love each and every one of you founding red team ( black ops) members...thank you times infinity.

Ted,
it's a pleasure for me to be in "Patient Zero" list. Thank you for that.
i want to tell my "Patient Zero" story.
We were driving to the hotel with Ted. we saw a movie poster of Amazing Spiderman which was shot on Red Epic.
We looked eachother and decided to watch movie in theater. it was last screening of the day.
There was 2 more people in theater. it was like watching movie with a film star. :)
We waited till ending titles to see "Shot on Red".After movie we couldn't even find anyone to take photo of us.
That's why i m posting a photo of Ted shot by me :)
Thank you for everything you did for us and for reputation of Red in Turkey.
it was a great time to hang with you and Clint during your Turkey trip.
Please come again.

It's so great reading all these stories of first contact and various moments that set the course in motion for the company that is RED. keep em coming!

Here's my story of today. July 23rd 2013 while it's fresh in my mind.

I just came from seeing Pacific Rim at the Century City Cinema in 3D IMAX. I have to tell you, I think it's the perfect movie. I so thoroughly enjoyed it on so many levels!

So heres the story part… after a super fun but very long and strenuous day at camp RED on the Paramount lot shooting EPIC with lots of insanely motivated and talented kids and screening their dailies in our ad-hoc theater on the sound stage we are using, I realize I have a big meeting at Warner Bros tomorrow morning to talk about and prep the Pacific Rim event we are doing along with the Filmlight folks next week (which we are all really excited about)

So after traveling in Russia for past couple weeks, I still hadn't seen the movie, and I have this meeting tomorrow to talk all about it - so I drag my weary body back into the car and over to the theater for the 745pm show.

Man was it worth it! The movie is totally awesome. If you haven't seen it yet, go see it on the biggest screen in your city! I felt like I was 15 years old again watching every frame of that thing in all it's IMAX Digital Giant screen glory!

Now the fun starts for me before the movie even begins, when the IMAX version trailer of Enders Game and Elysium play back to back (both shot all on EPICs if you weren't aware) they looked fantastic on that big screen - no other camera other than 8/70 or 15/70 film can do images like that, so proud that EPIC footage not only holds up on that giant sheet, but excels at it!

Then Pacific Rim starts up. 3D glasses on, big full on movie experience… ready, set, go.

The first 10 minutes of the movie - awesome!

The story arc of the movie - fantastic!

The character development, acting and direction - spot on perfect!

The EPIC cinematography - every frame totally rock solid and wonderful treat for the eyes! and man does it hold up great on the big screen. totally pulls you in and won't let go - that's what real cinema is all about and this lands the big prize over and over again in every scene!

The Visual FX and compositing and the use of the EPIC footage in the VFX universe they created - totally all world - among best I've ever seen! The 3D post work to is spot on and really adds to the experience (I'm sure it's great in 2D as well, but they did a really nice job with the 3D creation and geometry for the big screen experience)

and there's a lot more great things about this movie, there is totally wonderful story telling, perfect sexual and comradery chemistry between the two protagonists, classic character bonding, genius hero among heroes story creation, all things that are really hard to manage in a big tent pole movie.

There is amazing action all the way through, fantastic comic relief, stunning set design and production design, and the sound is off the hook as well, just super big and wow to support the visuals! The movie has incredible scope and scale. and it just keeps getting better and better till you think it's over, and then its not, there's a lot more movie to go.

I'm not sure what the reviewers have said about this movie, I haven't looked yet, but if they don't think it is a totally great summer movie going treat, they are total idiots. This movie rocks - hard. it is a true Epic movie… and handy for us they picked a pretty great camera to shoot it with.

I was tired going in to the theater, fully energized coming out a few hours later. as I was driving home, I was thinking how cool it was that I got to meet and talk to Guillermo Del Toro at CinemCon a few month ago, and how nice he was, how much of a big kid he was and what nice things he had to say about RED and the EPIC cameras they used on the movie. after seeing the work, I can see why he was so jovial and fun to hang with for a bit at CinemaCon… he's the biggest kid in the world, getting to play in the best possible sandbox! Way to go Guillermo, I wish everyone could see the world like you :-)

I was so proud to think that our RED team has a small but important part in bringing this movie to life. it truly defines the word EPIC and it's a great showcase to the power of a brilliant movie making team with all the right tools and talent at their disposal.

OK, that's it for my story for the night… can't wait to go to Warners tomorrow and hang with some of the creative team and Maxine the grading artist… so much fun I can hardly stand it :-) If you haven't seen it yet, Go see Pacific Rim on the big screen, and see if you like it as much as I did!

Absolutely, Greg and the Diamond Bros. for sure part of the Patient Zero group!

As soon as I can - Vietnam was one of my favorite places to visit. I highly recommend anyone that digs real adventure travel go there!

Godspeed, Ted. I'm sure you are, but always be safe, sir -- I'm paranoid.

But paranoia is founded -- I've been here long enough to see some stuff I wouldn't have imagined. Couple high-profile burglaries, espionage, crazy stuff.

So Proud to be on this list with my friend Arno Ted, what a good idea ! So proud to be infected in 2007 !
I see the first Dragon shot on Mark Toia Vimeo ... As you did it before many times from 2007, it's an incredible evolution for our favorite cameras ... Congratulation to all the RED Team !

Hi

I think Eirik Tyrihjell was the 1st in Norway.
I guess my number is a bit up, but I was amongst the 1st to take delivery and have had RED cameras all over me and my work ever since, both for my own weird stuff, and commercials and mainstream TV, filmschools and other events...

Remember after the 1st month of testing, when I started to take the R1 out to clients and explaining how to make the event eventless... :)

Nope... Do not shoot against the sun through branches.
What will happen? It just reboots...
Nope. No audio.
Yup
LOVELY images
(this was like in early beta modus! We knew that and dealt with that)

But you CAN tip it over with a 2575 mounted, unless the lens or LCD breaks from that impact, of course... :)

Built like a tank. Fragile like a baby.

But THAT soon went over...

Ted, yes remembered taking my first lesson with you and Michaei Cioni at then PlasterCity. Gone on to Paris to learn more from Arno and then the first Reducation in LA. Being mistaken as a Red salesman in Malaysia, trying to sell our services using the Red to skeptical production houses looking at me with jaundiced eyes. Move on to Indonesia, Vietnam and now in China and Macau. What a ride and not buying a new camera from the very first Red One - just upgrading and upgrading. Now a totally new Dragon for an indecent price. Thanks for keeping my investment valuable all these years. Lim
