  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Paralinx Arrow caused HDMI-Board crash in Epic - had to send it "home" for repair

Absolutely, it is related to have a device plugged in on the port, what I meant was that I don't believe it's related to a specific device to cause the issue.

Another Arrow Fail

While shooting with my Epic last week our Paralinx Arrow + crashed and burned our HDMI port. Come on. This has been going on for two years now. Fix it.

So the issue is either DSMCs' HDMI port/signal chain being made with burn-out-happy components, or Parallax's specific configuration/parts causing DSMC's HDMI port to burn out. Either way, it's a haggard situation, particularly because warranties are likely up (and neither company would likely take responsibility).

I have owned an Epic since March last year. I have Paralinx HDMI transmitter/receiver. In August last year - when camera was 3 months old and transmitting via HDMI - the HDMI died. Sent to RED and had I/O board replaced under warranty and instructed that the issue was unlikely caused by my accessories and I could continue to use them with confidence as the faulty board has been replaced. Yay!!!!

but...

Earlier this month HDMI died again. Sent to RED . No warranty cover. $1950 USD to have I/O board replaced plus over $800 AUD in shipping and customs TAX... around $3300 AUD to get the HDMI working again - door to door. $3300 AUD!

I use the Paralinx with my canon camera and have zero stress when shooting. Using HDMI on the RED = stressful... potentially very expensive.

Through correspondence with RED tech team they were reluctant to dish out any info on the specifics of the problem. Didn't blame the hardware - didn't blame me... it just 'failed'.

I still love my Epic but am pissed off that the $2000 I/O board on my 20 thousand dollar camera has the life expectancy of a $3.26 ebay item.

Picked up serviced Epic today from Fedex. Shooting with client and agency tomorrow. HDMI feeding directors monitor. Wish me luck with my bran new I/O board.

My Paralinx Tx was fried due to a P-tap inserted the wrong way during a full feature.

Ive had no issues with the HDMI after the fact and Paralinx replaced the board (not a bad price).

Its working now so no harm.

Crossing fingers this doesnt happen to me.

HDMI is one of the worst thought out connection solutions of all time! HDMI plug contacts are way too close together and there is way too much flex in the socket to prevent crossover and shorts. That said, anecdotally, it appears that the Red cameras are sensitive to burnout due to under engineering. One would think that Red would address the issue. I've had my Nyrius on a number of cameras including our local rental house's Epic with no issues. What burned out my Nyrius was an Alexa. If you run any kind of powered video adaptor with an Alexa Don't power it with any on board power! It can run as much as 36 volts between one of the SDI contacts and the onboard power outputs. This is a flaw in their design.
