  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panchros set vs angenieux optomo DP

WEll, you're compring it to TS lenses, designed for shooting straight lines. For a spherical lens, compared to other spherical lenses, it performs very well. A tech from cooke, actually told me at NAB that the Panchro 18mm is sharper than the S4 18mm, and is on par or slightly sharper than the i5 18mm @T2.8, Despite the massive price difference. He chalked it up to the fact that they are T2.8, they are less technically complex, and thus they can divert more energy in to making them perform better.

Exactly. Now, I do think it's an awesome lens and I'm planning to add the Canon mount to my Epic wish list, so the T/S glass will handle those straight line needs. I'm doing a little test this morning of that 18mm / R1 against my tech camera and yes the distortion is there... but there is something else in the files that is going to blow your socks off. Images soon...

and sorry to go So OT... but this is mildly relevant to Panchros. A quick test to look at image distortion on the Cooke 18mm. The other sample is from my medium format system. You can see a difference on the edges where the Cooke barrels a touch and my Schneider doesn't. Also the still camera is 60MP so there's way more snap due to greater resolution/sharpness. But.... DUDE.... look at the window! And I set this to RG2 in order to get an image that would match the still camera closer. The tone in the friggin window!!!! OH, Graeme.... I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!!

If your interested in Rouge Optimo's you should read the "Salt" lens test. Many (or most) of the heavy weights were very impressed with the projected images from the Rouge Optimo's. Its worth a read from what looked to be a fairly thorough test with many of the popular lenses.

Very aware of the Salt tests.....not dishing the DP optimos......just saying they are not top of the line. My favourite lens right now is the 18-85 Fujinon......T2......as clean as a master prime. No distortion. We own 3 of them......and I can't say enough for the Fujinon Gold Ring lenses (as opposed to the Silver Ring Aluras). Clean, Fast, No or little distortion. But that comes with a price. (as everything does these days.)

I would concur with the Cooke tech.

Lens theory would suggest the T 2.8 might be better than a T2 lens stopped down to T2,8 as the light has to travel through less glass.

I would concur with the Cooke tech.

One practical aspect to the consideration of which lens set to buy is availability. If you can wait or place your order now, then great. But currently the Angenieux lenses are backordered heavily, some of them well into 2012. I believe the Cooke Panchros are far more readily available. While such considerations should not be brought into such a decision, realities are realities.

On the flip side but also a very practical consideration, if you are looking into renting out your lenses when not in use by you, I can absolutely state that the Optimo zooms are a far better investment financially. The demand is vastly greater than the Panchros on the rental market.

In regards to rental and demand, I think that varies greatly from place to place. I would think that a affordable set of cooke primes would rent out more than the DP zooms here in Denmark for commercial work.

I was a bit surprised about how much the panchroes breathe though. In the "panchro vs Luma technic" thread.

In NYC the Panchros rent far more for music videos, Beauty Commercial work, and Narritive. CP's and Aluras seem to rule the day when it comes to corporate and non beauty commercials. (obviously big commercials are being shot with Masters, S4's and Optimos)
