Alright to all of you who have more experience with lenses than I... I need your opinion. I can either buy a set of Panchros 2.8 including the 18mm or get two angenieux optimo DP zoom 16-42 and 30-80 also 2.8 for about the same price to use with the Epic. Which route would you go and why? I know that ultimately I will have to test the lenses myself to make the right decision but I'm still interested in everyone's opinion.

Zooms, for convenience and speed on set
But you knew that already.......

Is there a noticeable quality difference as far as visually and resolution/sharpness? How about edge falloff? And as far as pulling focus do you find primes better or are high quality zooms like the Angenieux just as good?

Not IMO..
And the crew will love you for sparing them the heavy cases and frantic lens changes...

Definitly Angenieux. Both brands look nice, but at T2.8, zooms are simply better if you do lots of crane shots, steadicam, one man works or small crew... I would take the 40/120 over the 30/80 though.

I have the DPs (Rouges) and they are stunning, after grading the first short I shot with them I was just blown away that they could be that, well pretty. They are very sharp but not as crisp as Zeiss primes, which also makes them more flattering, closer to the Cooke rendering without the yellow cast and funky iris bokeh. Also they display about a stop of so fall off towards the edges till about 4-5.6. Personally I love the way this draws the eye into the center of the frame, it's one of the attributes that endered me so much to the Zeiss Standard speeds.
I currently don't think there is a better set of owner/op lenses than the DPs. The new 45-120 is superb and if your budget allows go for it, but it alone is more than the two DP lenses together.

I would personally rather own top of the line zooms than a third tier prime set (S5 > S4 > Panchro).

But while I think the DP zooms are value for money, there is no way to consider them top of the line. The 15-40, 28-76, 17-80 and 24-290 are in a much higher bracket, and are much better lenses. Project both lenses, and tell me what you see on the aberations......you will be suprised at how well the panchros project.

Yeah, crippling lens with an extender to protect the top tier is pretty low.... They did have good reasons for it- the DP line would never happen otherwise.....

All very good information so far. Thank you all for the input. Keep it coming. This is helping greatly! I'm realizing that choosing lenses is a little bit like choosing a wife....;)

I love me some Panchros. The 18 distorts too much for my taste, but throughout the set there is a creaminess and rich bokeh that make me get all gooey. I'm sure the Angenieuxes are awesome but my primes are so small and beautiful. I imagine these lenses on the Epic while I'm hugging my pillow just before I fall asleep.

you feel the 18 distorts too much? i feel the opposite. Its looks neutral to me. thats the best part about it.

If your interested in Rouge Optimo's you should read the "Salt" lens test. Many (or most) of the heavy weights were very impressed with the projected images from the Rouge Optimo's. Its worth a read from what looked to be a fairly thorough test with many of the popular lenses.

It has a bit of barrel distortion which is an issue for my architectural work. Mind you I'm accustomed to View Camera lenses that have ZERO distortion. My Canon 17 TS-E has almost no distortion.... so if I place a building on the edge of the frame it renders straight up and down.... the Cooke 18 (even when leveled) will put a bit of curve in that building. Maybe we can compare samples. I'd love to know if mine has unique issues.
