  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panavision primo lenses on RED

pv mounts for red exist now.. just wondering whos been able to rent some glass and shoot (besides some bigwigs)
a panavised RED wont be exclusive to renting from panavision.
anyone can have a panavised red.

Panavision very clearly hates Red so that rumor is either false or I would suspect shenanigans. No doubt they'll have genesis' standing by when all their sabotaged Red's go down. Oh joy.

Oh please, grow up.

If someone wants to use Panavision glass on their RED then all they have to do is talk to Panavision about it. It is a rental facility that serves the needs of its clients.

Now if someone comes along and tries to take work that already belongs to Panavision away from the company in any way, then certainly they are going to try to keep their client. That's just common sense smart business.

There are a lot of politics involved of course. But no one is going to sabotage and equipment. This is both too small and too big an industry for such nonsense.

these days there are just as good alternatives as primo's. I don't understand all of the hype of the primo's when you have ultra primes, masterprimes, S4's, Angenieux and Zeiss zooms. And you tell em Mitch. :)

Ha. You've got be kidding. Myself and others that have tried have been turned down by Panavision specifically for use on Reds.

And why wouldn't Panavision do their best to make Reds fail with clients so they could propagate more rumors about red's failing? You don't think they aren't doing that already? Try hanging around for a few days around PV in Woodland Hills for a prep. You'll hear lots of anti-red propaganda.

Just saying... no one got anywhere in hollywood by playing nice and PV is no exception.

Agreed. After we gave up shooting Primos, we ended up with a set of MPs and haven't looked back since. We rent MPs whenever we have the budget now.

Been there, done that. Doesn't make me hot. Makes me think about politics. The glass is nice. Arri Master Primes are even better. Nuf said.

The first part of "Che" aka "The Argentine" was shot on the Red with PV anamorphic lenses. I saw it on the big screen in Cannes. It looked very good...

PV lenses are of very high quality, but even better is the service you'll get while selecting lenses. Panavision has a very deep inventory of strange and special optics and sometimes they are willing to make you something if they don't have it already.

Saying one lens set is "better" is like saying beer is better than wine. It's a matter of personal taste, in different situations most open minded people might prefer one or the other, but they both will get you drunk... ( and it all starts to look the same at a T8 )

I have not found the politics to be that big an issue if you approach Panavision in a sensible way. I've used Panavision sourced lenses ( although in PL mount ) on several Red shoots. And I have a spare PV mount standing by. If a project dictates PV glass I'll use it in a second.

Agreed. It is all a matter of taste. I wouldn't be upset with any of the lenses mentioned in this thread. They all shoot beautiful pictures - with the help of the Red of course.

word on the street (or someone that works at panavison) is that they have 10 panvised reds... but they don't rent them out.

Somebody posted this photo at the forum before, I saved it on my desktop, but I couldn't find the tread now

and will offer you this picture from another server as an example of the Panavision Primo lens on RED.

A quote to live by:biggrin:

I am hearing (from the horse's mouth) that PV is offering Reds here in Sydney.

Hey Pawel,

who is the horse?

I want to speak to him about a feature I am shooting in Melbourne.

Contact Andrew Timlin from PV in Sydney on 02-9436 1844 and you can even mention that I recommended you contacting him regarding Red One rental. You may even end up with my camera and glass :innocent:
