  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panavision DXL-M

Panavision built a in house digital 65mm with there "own sensor" and own codec and never released it and instead released this. I'm not sure who built it but I seem to remember hearing where. I'm not sure at what point you not manufacturing them and only designing them is an issue but red got in with Apple, then china, then foxconn. They had a cheap 8k press release, current owners inquired worried about investments and boom now our price cut but also simplification of the lines. You can also scope out red jobs on there listing to get an idea of what is being hired currently in the US to get ideas on what is going on.

I love all three of these firms and own whatever they sell me

Unfortunately brother you are misinformed about this.

RED does indeed make their own sensors, which is seriously cool for a company of their size. They have stated it for years and it is a widely known fact.

A state the of the art fab is a multi-billion dollar enterprise, and Red's volumes are small even compared to IBM's before IBM gave up its one fab.

It's almost guaranteed that Red doesn't literally make its own sensors... but it's also almost guaranteed that Red's fabrication partner is working very closely with Red, and Red's engineers designed the sensors, the CFAs, data paths, and so on. That would also explain why Jarred Land receives batches of sensors now and then -- though it seems like that's smoothed out a lot as the yields have gone up and the production lines mature.

That's probably what Red means by making its own sensors; the designs, CFA specs, and external interface are almost certainly Red's designs, and the fab partner is providing the design rules, ovens, lithography equipment, and so on... otherwise a Monstro would cost a *LOT* more than it does. They're big, honkin' dies so their yields are small and so are their sales volumes. Red would have to be producing sensors for all sorts of partners in order to maintain its own fabs -- that's a large part of why Sony not only sells sensors to a lot of camera manufacturers, but also does custom work for companies like Phase One and Hasselblad. And sells a bizillion sensors for cell phone cameras...
