  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic HPX300

Thanks for the video, But I think Pani is going to have trouble at this price and 1/3 chips
when the ex3 is the same...put that on one of your shoulder mounts and the "little camera" problem is solved.

I am not bashing Pani, I have 3, but I think they missed the mark here.

EX3 vs. HPX300

EX3 vs. HPX300

I've recently made a comparison video about these two cameras. See the video here: http://Zacutovideo.com

In the video we do side by side comparisons with the EX3 and the Panasonic HPX300. Here is what I noticed:

The EX3 is impossible to handhold well unless you build it into a over shoulder setup with one of mine or other setups like my Zacuto baseplate system. And in effect you are making it a large over the shoulder camera like the HPX300 in order to get it balanced properly. If a camera is not balanced you cannot shoot for but 15 minutes before you hands get tired. Also, it is impossible to get stable tripod shots either, because the bottom of the camera is not flat and it wobbles the moment you touch the tripod handle. It is not a production grade camera, it's prosumer. That being said; The EX3 had very little noise (I mean very little) but as well the image looked kind of flat and not as dimensional to me.

The HPX300 has an amazing form factor in a tried and true over the shoulder design that has been the stable of the production business for over 30 years. It felt great on the shoulder. It's 10 times more durable then the EX3, a production grade build, not a prosumer build. It did have more noise in the image then the EX3 but it also had better color and depth to the image.

So now here is the tough choice. I would take the HPX300 all day long over the EX3 because I enjoy the ENG design and construction build. But I may be living with a bit more noise to do it. I prefer the color and dimension to the HPX300. Still I'd go with the HPX300 because the form factor is that important to me and being able to comfortable shoot all day is key.

it seems a bit odd to me to give up quality (adding noise) just to mount it on your shoulder. I do think smaller cameras lighter weight is an issue. but all you gotta do is build it up a little and custom fit it to your comfort level as much as possible. technology moves so fast that " a little grain" will be a too much grain fast. It almost seemed like an infomercial for panasonic. actually it didn't seem it was an infomercial for panasonic. not a bad camera all around though. it has its market i guess.

Did you guys play with the camera's settings?

For some reason, they come from the factory with Master Pedestal boosted to +14. That might be most of the noise you are seeing.

Nice to hear the build quality is top notch. I think this is going to be a hot seller, AVC-Intra as well as full faster chips... Panny hit one out of the park with this camera.

But why 1/3 chips?? I think it would have been smarter to go 1/2 chips, it might canabalize some HPX500 business, but a better trade off for the little guy.

Panasonic and sony will never change their pollicies it seems.

They could have easily put 1/2 or even 2/3 chips in there , but then they loose sales on the hpx500, or why haven't they made an update for the 500 in the first place, without the design of a totally new system, it could have been cheaper and even sold more units of it, because then it would have had all the benefits if they would have put the avc intra 100 in it as well,
in a certain price range this could have become a killermachine,
but now it still pushes us towards the R1 in anyway, and if you want to spent less i still would go for the ex because it's a lot cheaper and has stunning results, at least that's what's my experience day by day.

Smaller sensor meant less expensive optics. Remember, the zoom is included in the price and there are five other zooms out there available for this mount.

I too am a big fan of the over the shoulder one piece ENG form factor. This is a model that has evolved continuously for more than 20 years to meet the demands of day in day out TV news shooting as well as field production. When well executed it is fast, efficient, and confortable to use for hours on end. All important controls are right under your fingers on dedicated buttons or switches and stable off the shoulder shots are easy.
