  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic 17", 26" vs JVC 20" HD LCD

8-bit 4:2:2. And it looks great.
 
I was doing video assist / card dumping on a shoot yesterday with my Panasonic BT-LH1760. The DP, on a whim, rented the 26" for the clients to watch. And the plan was for us to swap monitors, so he could use my 17". An interesting thing happened. Not at one point did anyone actually use my brand new 17" for anything. Everyone, all 10 agency people, and DP flocked to the 26" evidently wooed by its larger image size. Only downside was rolling two carts around all day (verses my traditional single cart which is suitable for drive dumping and monitoring). But, all things considered, I have to admit, the 26" really is the perfect monitor for agency / clients people, on a commercial.
 
JVC is 8-bit as well. We do sell them although I don't know what we have in stock or on the Sales floor in LA.
 
I have new Panasonic 2550 and older Panasonic 1700. New monitor is great, looks better than JVC in my opinion. It can display 2 cameras at the same time too.
I bought it at Abel NY.
Now I have to find light case and stand. I highly recommend that monitor.

The 2550 has standard VESA mounting holes on the back and they cut the weight dramatically, so the same stands you're used to from Abel should work. When I get a chance I'll design a standard Abel case for the 2550 that holds everything. But you could always go with the same setup you already have for your 17" -- just the VESA plate and the lightstand adaptor, right?
 
I think what I would like to use is just regular stand that monitor comes with and lightstand adapter. I do not like heavy plate from that rental setup but I like stand attachment.
Can I buy that lightstand adapter separately?
I am in studio few blocks away so I may stop to get it if we finish early ;)

Come on by.

The stand base is the cheapest part of the assembly and it comes in the kit. No law that says you need to use it. It's just dumb metal.
 
So the blacks on the JVc may be better than the 26" panasonic, but I wonder how they compare to the 25.5" since it really seems to be making people happy. Lighter is also great...

So if the blacks of the 25.5 are close to the 26's it might be worth the extra money for those of us looking for a one monitor set and post 1080 solution, huh?
 
I would honestly go with the Panasonic over the JVC any day of the week. For multiple reasons, but visual performance being on the top of the list. Like the 1700 series, I expect the 2550 to quickly become an industry-standard tool.
 
Yes, the panasonic 1700's over JVC any day.

can you describe visual performance being on top of the list things ?
 
Off angle viewing
color accuracy
glare
LUTs
image control
overglow (white next to black doesn't bleed)
perceived contrast
scaling of 720p

and other stuff as well...

What about price point Mitch ? When you talk about color accuracy, do you say that the black in Pana is better than JVC ?
 
I'm not a sales person so I don't know pricing, but I understand that the Panasonic is not particularly expensive. The blacks on the JVC can appear darker due to the gloosy finish compared to the Panasonic's matte fnish, but this is a distinction that can be tossed the moment the monitor is in any environment where light will hit the screen and cause all sorts of glae. The JVC is far more susceptible to glare reflections which effectively wash out the blacks and otherwise hinder performance.

The Panasonic looks better.
