  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pan. and Sony announcements

Still I felt a bit left out to. All we got was Joseph's coverage (which was great and I am thankful for) and some peoples iPhone pictures. I do not really get it why Red doesn'T spend more time on its web presentation. It's not like they can't afford hiring someone for that. Instead you have to browse through 10 threads to keep up.

Amen, Bruder! :D

It`s definately frustrating that Red offloaded their p.r. to this forum only...

I think the AG-AF100 will sadly steal a lot of potential 2/3 buyers.

It has been proved that a lot of people are willing to put up with a bad codec, House being the prime example.

Between the VSLRs and this camera, by the time Scarlet 2/3's hits its status as a "gamechanger" will be pretty questionable.

It should've come out last year, as it was originally intended. That was the right timing. Now people are already hooked on bigger sensors and using cheap still glass.

I'm not speaking for myself though, I'd take a 2/3 instead of the AF100 anytime, though what I really want is the S35.

The thing is, RED gave the big guys too much time to prepare. I'm pretty certain Sony and Canon are also working on cameras similar to the AF100.

It's funny, in the few people who have said exactly as you have said, I had to remind them of the specs of the 2/3, like MUCH HIGHER frame rate, resolution, touch to focus, rack focus, remote camera control, and LCD you can remove and put anywhere you want, RAW footage. Once they considered these aspects, they really changed their mind.

But to really drive it home, I said, you can upgrade the brain and also keep all your other parts.

I think the 2/3 and the AG-AF100 though are in different categories of what you want. If you are wanting easier to get shallow DoF, you're gonna get a S35. We want the Scarlet Fixed because we need a camera that can get deep DoF for our fight scenes and VFX shots in our movies. This is why I'll use both the Fixed and S35 brain (with my Canon lenses) to get the best of both worlds.

I just see getting a lot more for your money with the Red camera at least at this point in the game.

But, when images start coming out from all three companies, that will be the deal sealer. :)

I can't imagine why. 1080p in a shit codec for $6000 or 3K RAW for $4750. I know which I pick.

Well, the scarlet is 2/3 and this is 4/3. There is a huge difference in that sense. This is like a 5D without all the horrible aliasing. It depends on how you shoot. If you don't need to use 35mm lense or get super shallow DF then scarlet is for sure better. raw is a dream, and reduces stress on set as you have to commit to far less before shooting.

I'm still very suspect of the 4/3. After going through their slides, and the slide on using the ND filter to reduce aliasing by allowing you to go shallower with a wider aperture, seems to indicate they still suffer from a bit of aliasing.

Also, what worries me about the 4/3 is the read/reset.

I would love to see RED develop a 4/3 4k camera down the road. Perfect intermediate format step between 2/3" and S35.

Or functional bin the S35 sensors and those with bad pixels in the outside 4/3 area could be recycled into a new product.
