  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

P+S Technik eyepiece loupe.

not cheap, but i am sure its good quality

I wish RED and P+S Technik would have a shakehand and P+S do a RED blessed IMS mount and the Evolution-based optical viewfinder they had planned for their X35 and Weisscam. They make it already for the 2/3" B4 adaptor for the SI2K.

However, there being some enmity between RED and ARRI, then P+S Technik being ex ARRI engineers who support ARRI film cams with the Evolution upgrade and eyepiece mod, if a RED-authorised IMS-Mount and Optical viewfinder from P+S for the EPIC/SCARLETT family was an anvil on a rope over your head, I think you can be assured of standing there a very long time without fear of being shortened by a foot by it falling on your dome.

On film cameras, that option was important, so as not to let light leak onto the film. Don't quite see the advantage of having one in an EVF (unless you are planning on pointing it towards the sun)

I bought a VF loupe system for one of my touch screens... The 1st time someone else used it they caused sundamage to the screen. I have subsequently noticed other screens with sun damage from loupes... A bit anecdotal I know but becuase of this If I ever bought another loupe I would like I to auto shut..

Would welcome other peoples thoughts?

If P+S Technik do not have the eyepiece iris already fitted, my guess is there would be little problem for them to do so as the similar "Evolution" eyepiece as fitted to the SI2K optical viewfinder for B4 lenses already has that fitment.

You can skip playback to the eyepiece iris at 0:59. It is not a pressure-actuated iris, so you would still need to have the discipline to close it.

The clip was derived from my observations when using the B4 optical viewfinder for 2/3" cameras, not from any P+S Technik published information.

As for my earlier prognostications about IMS-Mounts and optical viewfinders, subssequent examination suggests the RED EPIC/SCARLETT design has a deep inset of the sensor within the casework. This arrangement appears to eliminate any possibility of an IMS mount option unlike the original RED One.

With the EPIC/SCARLETT, the rear shoulder of the IMS insert may impinge upon inner structures of the camera body, prevent correct flange seating and may therefore damage the gizzards of the camera.

The deep set arrangement defeats IMS style third party or home hacks, either by design or coincidence. This may lock owners into keeping the faith and sticking with RED-designed or sanctioned hardware to protect them from misadventure as much as possible.

The collateral effect is that it likely also locks the EPIC/SCARLETT out of the optical-split viewfinder option in a modified PL-Mount without engineering costly optical extenders into the path. A redesign of the camera body front end with an optical split inbuilt might be an option. That operation would become a major disruption of internal design and other modular attachment features, amounting to a third evolution.

Without lengthening the physical flange to focal plane distance, there seems to be insufficient real estate between the camera casework and rear of PL-Mount lenses to fit an optical split.

If I have raised an artificial expectation by my earlier post and have set anyone up for disappointment, please accept my apologies. Optical viewfinders are nice to provide to former film-camera operators but also introduce the possibility of exposure errors if the system is solo operated, no more so than with a film camera but an added risk nevertheless.
