  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

P Proxy - can't select Unlimited RT in Timeline

Was recently on a job where the director wanted to do a cuts only offline on his MacBook Pro using the Red QT proxies in FCP 6.

Dropping the P-proxies into the timeline we were unable to select Unlimited RT in the timeline to playback without rendering (the option was missing entirely from the drop down menu).

However, M-proxies were fine. We were also able to drop a single M-proxy into the timeline, select Unlimited RT, and then drop in the rest of the P-proxies, and delete the first M-proxy and still playback without rendering!

Since then, I've found the same with FCP 7.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

I think you will find it's because FCP will only do unlimited in certain resolutions and the P proxy isn't one of them.

That's my guess anyway, easy to test.

Thanks Jim!

I don't think that's the case, as I was able to work around it by first using an M-proxy which I then removed from the timeline completely, leaving just P-proxies! Then FCP 6 & 7 works just fine.

The catch is that FCP bases its RT around the sequence settings, not the footage. So if you make a sequence that's the right size (Like you did with the M proxies) and then populate it with off-sized footage, it will still RT.

Exactly. When you put in an M proxie, the timeline conformed itself to it. When you replaced it with a P, it remained in the resolution of M and upsized P to fit.

In other words, FCP will only do unlimited in certain resolutions and the P proxy isn't one of them.

OK, that might well be the case. But why the seemingly arbitrary distinction between the two (granted that Apple makes stupid decisions all the time!)?

P-proxies are easier to playback than M-proxies in QT player, so why lock that out in FCP. Are you sure it's not a bug rather than a "feature"?

Yep. It's a "feature". Or at least a persistent bug that applies to non-RED footage as well. Basically you only get RT on "normal" resolutions.

Thanks Ben! :)
