I am in the process of purchasing a used Scarlet from a fellow RedUser... I met up with him this past week to take a look at the camera... It looks gorgeous. I will be buying the camera from him within a week...

My question is... Can I send it to RED for the transfer of ownership at any time? When I purchase the camera I have a few gigs right away where I will need the camera so I don't really have time for the inspection/transfer immediately.

Thanks!

You don't have to send it to RED for ownership transfer. And if you choose, you can send it in for evaluation later. There is a warranty you can buy after evaluation - "Transfer Armor" - but I don't know how much time you have to do that and the camera has to be evaluated at RED before you can buy it.

There is two ways to do a transfer of ownership...

One were you or the downer of record sends in the camera to RED, after receiving an RMA, at which point RED inspects/Evaluates the camera, and if any repairs are needed they would be brought up before proceeding, if no repairs are needed, then the cost is $100 for the Evaluation and $500 for transfer of ownership/+90 Day warranty.

Before you start the process, you need to open a RED account, following which the Seller/owner of record, will proceed on by sending an email to the reed transfer department asking for the transfer of ownership, you need to be CC' in this email (using the same email used to open your Red account) and approve of such transfer).

I strongly always advise this process as to insure that the camera been purchase is in perfect working conditions, and if found to be not so by RED's evaluation the seller will pay for any repair costs.

Or, as Jeff already pointed out, you can skip the $100 evaluation cost and the shipping back and forth to California by NOT sending the camera in, however, you still need to pay the transfer of ownership fee while NOT getting the 90 Day warranty... Your choice...

Again, I in all my Brokered deals always have made the seller/buyer go thru option 1... And I suggest again you do the same, unless absolutely positive that the camera has been tested and runs perfectly.

Best of luck Jarret!

Actually transfer of ownership is only necessary to get access to firmware upgrades. But the whole procedure is worth the hassle & cost for peace of mind, support and resale ownership documentation.

How long does it take from that you send the camera until you get it back from RED?

That an anything to do with any given repair the camera might come to need, which if you do not have done the transfer of ownership you need to always have the Owner of record, email support to create an RMA for you, and this is also an other good reason to have the camera transferred to your name asap after purchase or better yet at time of purchase... ;)
