Hi everyone,

I have my original 6-core Mac Pro 2013 (16gb ram) and it seems can't handle 4K smooth (lots of lag and very slow). I'm thinking of replace Apple 16gb RAM with OWC 64GB KIT, anyone experienced with this brand before? Does the 64GB really help the post-production flow more smooth?

Thank alot.

I have that, works great but also have their 2TB SSD which might also contribute to performance. Smooth playback with 5k transcoded material from Scarlet W using FCP X. I have 6 core with 500 series co-processor. Never a problem with OWC.

I have had quite a few issues with OWC, specifically their ssd hd arrays and their tech support. It was making my brand new 5k imac crash unexpectedly multiple times a day. Everyone there was ridiculously cocky, acting as if theres no way their product could be the problem, when it clearly was. Talked to 3 different guys and none of them cared to help or hear me out, only tried to up sell me on their xtra Raid software. The software didnt help and after 4 weeks of back and forth, I went with another companys ssd array, and voala no more problems. Other than the fact they didnt refund me in full till about 3 weeks worth of emails and calls. That company was a PITA seriously. Sorry for the rant, but they really screwed me for a while. Also I certainly know there are much higher quality products out there.

Your experience is common. OWC has been around quite awhile and is one of the few Mac resource vendors available. The customer service is responsive. But, the company's strongest and only virtue is probably Mac accessories. For enterprise needs, it would better to partner with a company that has a stronger forte.

The Mac Pros have dime overheating problems and can cause the ram to have ECC ram errors. its not only OWC ram, even the apple gets errors. extra cooling is important. in my experience with two Mac pro 6 core and 4 core, the more ram you feed it the hotter it runs, we are doing fine scaling down to 32GB for 4K. there are also a few GPU out of memory problems, but they go away after a reboot. This happens on both machines. First check your ram dime for errors is System check

My 6-core 16gb handles 4K playback/cutting just fine, so it seems like you might have slow IO. Where is your footage stored, and where is it being rendered to? That makes a huge difference. USB 3 hard drives don't cut it as scratch drives for 4K raw. More RAM always helps, of course. Crucial has $50 per 8GB DIMM on Amazon right now, and their stuff is pretty solid. Never had issues with them.
