  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Overclocked Ryzen 1700 + GTX1080 for cheap transcode machine

I'd hold out for AMD's Naples, which launches at Computex. You get high-core Ryzen + AMD GPU with HBM. Perfect transcoding setup. Intel also has a Kaby Lake with discrete GPU and HBM that they are launching soon, so that might be ideal.

If someone can make a motherboard for that with Thunderbolt 3 and a couple of pci-e 16x slots, I am SOOO going there.
 
None of the above. Computex and other events later this year will bring new GPUs, with high-performance memory options and HDMI 2.1/Whatever the new DisplayPort might be.
 
Ran some tests with Ryzen 1700 and an Older GTX Titan...

WOW.

This thing SMOKES running 8K footage through RCX transcoding from R3D.

Haven't optimized data-drive flow or done any tuning or overclocking, but this is definitely a keeper.
 
Software hasn't even been tuned and optimized for Ryzen yet, so it should only get better and when Naples and AMDs Pro APUs with HBM come out, you're gonna see many more workstation and laptop builds with AMD hardware.
 
We're starting to see leaks regarding the high-end Ryzen CPUs, which will likely be unveiled at Computex, in a short time. More or less, double the capabilities of what's out now, with performance room to spare and quad-channel memory support. Couple this with the new Vega GPUs with HBM and you've got a foundation for a machine that should handle whatever you can throw at it, if you can afford the right components. I myself am going to start looking into a new 8K image editing workstation with Ryzen/Vega and will be buying a Raven Ridge (APU) laptop when they are available.
 
AMD's enthusiast Ryzen CPUs are apparently named "ThreadRipper" in test documentation. 16-cores/32-threads and Quad-channel DDR4, for starters. They are basically a 1-CPU Prosumer/Enthusiast/Business version of Naples. No word on whether or not they will support ECC memory, but I suspect they will, even if nobody implements it in any boards intended for those chips, though Naples obviously will support it.
 
Dual Naples with infinity fabric will do the trick. 64 physical cores (128 threads) over two 32c CPUs. 8 channel RAM/socket (32 dime slots) and 128 lanes of I/O.

Won't be cheap, but still hope that price/performance is aggressive. Exciting times. Computex is end of May.
 
Starting to look like the new Intel i9 series CPUs are falling short of expectations. Intel needs to get out of this downward spiral of trying to continually drive down TDP in favor of increasing performance. It's going to be their undoing. Latest prototype benchmarks are showing the new 12-core desktop CPU to be a good 5%+ slower per core than the 10-core i7 6950X. But hey, it's got two more cores and doesn't consume any more power, right? Oh, and they made it more expensive. Again.

Ultimately I'm not worried. I'm hoping AMD has some meaningful success with Ryzen. Competition is good and Intel needs a kick in the ass right now.
 
Currently running OSX Sierra 10.12.6 on a Ryzen 1700 with the originally posted mobo.

Running some burn in testing to see how stable it is.

Geekbench scores were pretty LIT!
