Hi guys ,

Newbie question. I need to do a non moving overhead shot with hands in frame. Like the ones you see for cookery tutorials. How is this best achieved?

Thanks for your time guys

Maybe a mirror on a 45 degree angle? Haven't done it myself but might work! Personally I'd go for a jib though, or rig it up to some scaff pipe.

yup, like everyone said, a jib.

but back in my beginning music video days, all of the sudden the director wanted an over head shot, we did not have a jib.
what we did have though was an underslung head, i think it was a ronford 7.
my grips took the high hat, screwed it into a plank of wood, attached the head, turned it upside down and ratchet strapped the ends of the plank to two 8ft ladders. bam!

Ideally with a jib and some very toppy lighting, but you can do it with any half decent tripod as well.

Ladder rig

Ladder rig

Its a little hack but I've been using this kind of rig for years.

I've used a Twin Dolly a couple of time, you can attach the camera head upside down to achieve this shot.
Something I also did was ask the grip department at the rental house to talk with my grip and they came up with an plate for an truss, felt very scary but worked in the end.

Jib will also work like stated above!

Don't have any pictures around at the moment..

I just did an overhead shot with hands in frame the other day for a workshop. Did it with a handheld rig and the actor wrapped his arms around me and I stood on an apple box to create height. Obviously this depends on the size of your actor.

They call this the "Harvey Weinstein" method ;-)
