Hey there, just wondering how to output as DNX files so we can work with them in AVID, when I go to output settings then choose Quicktime then look up all the types, I cant find DNX anywhere?

Very new to it all..... any help much appreciated.

Cheers

I suspect that you will be needing the Quicktime Avid codecs
on the cpu you are using redcine/redalert/redline on.

You may also want to read this and download metacheater too.

At the moment I am leaning towards the ScratchCine 'telecine' to tape (with original timecode) and digitise methodology because

a. You get an archive medium that will fit in with current workflows
b. You get your footage on a format that is easy to view and log for clients used to tape (and unused to, for example, downloading and installing quicktime codecs)
c. You can match back to the R3Ds if you really have to.

All still conjecture at the moment though.

If you have a new version of Media Composer installed you should have the Avid codec installed, if not it can be downloaded free from Avid. What we do is run the Quicktime reference files (_M) through Compressor as DNxHD 36 files. They look great and are very small. They fast import into Avid via MetaCheater. You can use the QT reference files and import them directly into Avid via Metacheater but the conversion as it comes into Avid takes a long time.

Redcine does not see the DNxHD codecs when installed. This is a known issue and hopefully will be addressed in an updated version of the application.

does scratch cine pass audio?---i am not sure it can

RedCine 1.0 seems to see the Avid Codecs 1.8LE package on my MBP. Haven't output any DNXHD files yet, but it does see them.

ScratchCine not passing audio.. hmm you are right, there doesn't appear to be any mention of audio on the Scratch site. Back to double system from the one camera I guess ;-)

Yes, it does see DNxHD as a category, but you have no control over the data rates possible for progressive media:

DNxHD 36
DNxHD 115
DNxHD 175
DNxHD 175x (10 bit)
Uncompressed

I have seen 115 for 23.976 and 25p folks have seen 175x.

OK - I see that, I just get minimum/low/normal/high/maximum - with no guide as to what is what - and in RedAlert there are only a limited selection of installed codecs too.

It's all making scratch cine look more and more useful.

Just drop your Proxy of choice, id say _M into compressor and batch all your rushes to whatever DNx Flavor you want.
Make your ALE file with Metacheater
Import your Xcodes into the bin the ALE makes and it should take RT to import based on the length of each clip. not bad. been doing it for a few months and it works great.
Big issue! make sure you set your audio xcode setting to 24bit as RED packs its audio into a 32bit padded pack. and AVId can only read 24bit.
