Output sharpening / Recording from HDSDI out

Im using a Dragon and we are taking a feed to a Black Magic Hyperdeck Shuttle from the HDSDI. I have enabled separate gammas for the feed so its recording a redlog film output. Has anyone any suggestions for an output sharpening setting?

My thinking is this.

If I do not sharpen, I can sharpen.
If I over sharpen, I have no where to go.

My other advice is test it.

I hope I don't hijack your thread. Just wanted to ask if the sharpen also have an effect on other focus tools? I mean will they stack or can you still have the edge enhance (not sure its the right name) on without adding this new sharpening tool above? What I trying to say is will you have to choose this instead of say edge enhance? I don't want to activate two sharpening tools at once.

one is focus assist which outlines the sharpest pixels in the frame. The other is as monitoring sharpening adjustment designed to sharpen monitoring images going down the hdsdi and hdmi pipe, the sharpening can also be applied to the evf or touchscreen image. If those streams are recorded they will be recording sharpened images.

The r3d would have ZERO sharpening applied.

Joel: Yes they do appear to stack. I was shooting a lot of action handheld on tuesday and I turned on focus assist as well as cranking the sharpening to MAX. the end result was a hyper-focus-assist mode. It looked like garbage but it did help a lot with focus.

Rob: I wouldn't use much sharpening unless you're recording REDGamma4 and have no plans to apply sharpening later. Sharpening is ideally applied as the final step. If you do it as the first step things can get kind of weird when you color correct. If you are recording RLF and do need to apply some sharpening I would use only a tiny amount.

Hi Rob,

I did exactly this the other day recording Redgamma4 on a Samurai. I added a tiny bit of sharpening (probably around an eighth) which was perfect as I was shooting wide open at f1.4 so pictures were really soft to begin with). Really nice function this when 6K RAW is overkill.

Definitely want to be careful with it though as halfway to max on the sharpening slider makes skintone detail truly horrid! And its great on max for focus assist (if you're not recording the sdi output). I much prefer it to the focus detail display mode which I find too much for pulling focus.
