  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OSX Update 10.5.3

I updated and have had no problems with RedCine or the proxies. Of course, it still did not fix the choppy proxies playback on my MacPro. I'm really confused why even the M proxies are choppy. I've got 8 cores, 10GB ram, and a 200MB+ a sec RAID5 they are playing off.

Over 48 hours on 10.5.3 here... No worries yet.

Schweet... Thanks for the responses guys.

I'm curious (not tech knowledged enough to understand 200mb per sec) what speed hard drives are you using? Sounds like 7200rpm?

Choppy proxy playback is just a current issue. Has nothing to do with drive speed, cores, etc.. There's an actual software issue / glitch / bug, whatever you want to call it, that's to blame. I'm assuming that the new software to go along with build 16 will address some of these issues, such as proper 16:9 support, smoother playback, etc..

That's pretty hopeful. I didn't realize that. Anyway, I've been editing on 10.5.3 for a day and no weird crashes or bugs. 2008 8 Core with 2600XT.

Jeff,

I know you have an 8800 GT in you mac. Any speed differences that you notice?
I've seen on problem with Crimson. Has anybody else run Crimson in 10.5.3?

Hmmm.... I don't have any choppy playback problems in 4K 2:1 M proxies, even on my MacBook Pro 2.6GHz. The H proxies however, are a different story.

The issue could be video card related, no?

I have the stock ATI card in my Mac Pro and proxies work fine. I have 16GB of RAM and play off of FW800 drives

It seems to be a problem with the 8 core Mac Pros only.

Take a look at these posts:

Rob Lohman promised to investigate the problem back in January. We never got an update:

Funny thing is that the proxies run smoothly in Final Cut Pro, but they still use up almost all 8 cores.

I hope that it will all be resolved with the new QT codec version which needs to be done for firmware build 16.
