"The notion of directing a film is the invention of critics - the whole eloquence of cinema is achieved in the editing room." - Orson Welles

Many would - and do - agree with him, so why in the heck are the Oscars doing this ...

Among the awards that will be handed out in a pre-taped segment are editing, production design, score, make-up, sound, and the short film categories. The pre-taped categories are expected to find their way into the live show in an abbreviated form, according to multiple reports. In explaining its decision, the Academy mentioned “viewer engagement”.

Feel free to disagree, but there three main 'storytellers' in any given film: the writer, the director, and the editor. This decision makes no sence.

None.

Zero.

The decline of the Oscars, as well as other awards recognition shows, has everything to do with the arrogant, soap box acceptance speeches, and nothing to do with the length of the program, or recognizing the number of crucial 'invisible' talents behind the camera. After all, it is called the Academy of Art and SCIENCES. Perhaps the best actor catagories ought to be pre-taped. Best as I can recall, no awarded editor has ever told me i'm a piece of shit for liking my coffee with cream.

This is a remarkably poor decision.

Absolutely. I read two biographies about George Lucas. Lucas was very conscientious about editing and how important it was.

Depressing Academy Awards' yesterday, not only for the winners (Spielberg and Kenneth Branagh being beaten by Jane Campion is a joke) but above all, people act like nothing is going on in the East.

Let alone the egocentric/selfish and poor overacting little performance carried out by someone (Will Smith) who, despite his craft, still doesn't understand what to be an actor means or yet to be a man either.

Coppola, Al Pacino e De Niro saved them all with the only mention to the Ukrainan and Russian suffering made all over the performers of the night...

I begged myself not to watch them, and then did it anyways. 90% shit show with small reprieves of honesty and character in between. As if the world isn't dealing with enough violence already, 'Ol Willy has to throw down his 2 cents. Punk.

On a lighter note, I am so digging on the guitar work in this piece. Starts at 1:00, goes to 2:00. Can't say I have seen the technique before.

Also digging the lighting in this vid.

I watched none of it, but to your point. They should just eliminate the acceptance speeches - show a little more about the nominees, the mini trailers were always the best part anyway, and maybe some mini featurettes on the arts of editing, lighting etc. If the audience (and if the associated $ are smaller so be it.) Do we really need another venue to show off designer dresses?

Let the winners and losers send their appreciation to all that made it possible privately, or publicly in another forum.

Done well, they might find a larger audience for actual info on moviemaking than they think. Celebrate the ARTS and Sciences of filmmaking.
