Here is the work flow I plan on using for documentary shoot:
With Red Rushes create 1080p Prorez quicktime movies I will import into FCP and these files will be used to create final.

I am wondering if someone has come up with an idea of how to organize and rename clips but still be able to reference the original media numbers?

You can rename them in the bins in FCP to whatever you want and the program will remember original filename just fine.

Outside FCP you're going to have to stick with the original filenames if you go with prores....there's no header information in that file type to maintain the original data.

I've heard that some people add a new, unique name to the beginning of the existing RED generated file name in FCP.

(For example, Your_new_Name and the RED_file_name, separated by an underscore.) Don't know off-hand what the character limit is for a name in FCP.

Has this worked well for people?

Or, maybe you can copy each file name and add it to the FCP log notes. This way, after the changing the name of the clips in FCP, you at least always have a record within your project.

In theory, FCP will remain linked to your media files and not have any issues when you change the names in FCP. But I always prefer being a little cautious and keeping records, for those off-chances of things going funky...

Let me know what you do decide to do, I'm curious.

Sounds like you probably know this, but just to be explicit: remember not to change your R3D files names!

I just downloaded a program called renamer4mac. The idea for using this program that once the files are transcoded to prorez and before importing into final cut, with one click, I can rename large sections of files based on an event (or whatever) but leave the red file name after the new name. e.g. ceointerview_A001_C01_0923cq.mov
ceointerview_A001_C02_0923cq.mov etc etc

Does anyone see any problem with this, assuming Ill never want to automatically relink the files?
