Organizing backup - FCS vs Apache vs Cat DV

What are the solutions out there for organizing and retrieving backuped files?

The best thing would be to have a program that works regardless of source material type or editing programs/suite.

Is Final Cut Server such a program?
Someone told me that Apache systems and Cat DV were such programs.
Is this correct?

Any experience to share on using one of the above programs?
Is there other programs out there you will recomend for organizing files?
