  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ordering Red primes.

The build quality, look and fill of the 18-85, truly is unique and absolutely stunning, wow, what a lens, and even so on the heavy side, at about 10lb, it is still very portable, and its size, also big, it is not esagerated were it can't be hand held, shoulder mounted, and off course great for Steady cam, as well.

I really liked the mechanics and quality build of the 18-85. I suspect you will have a very hard time finding a steadicam op willing to shoot with it though. Balance would be really tough.

Glad you like it as well Finner.

The reason I mentioned its steadicam use, is because at the Both, I was talking about mounting the zomm on a steadicam "ARM" no vest, but mounted directly on to a Quad, track, or Trike, but a Steadicam operator, which if I recall correctly He said He uses the Tiffen steadicam, and was testing the new Ultra 2, with a rater long lens for Low mount, and He said that the weight it is not much of an issue considering the total weight with the RED camera, and that the length it self was something not easy to balance but not so difficult, for those shots in which was imperative to use the 18-85 on a steadicam.

Obviously not having used a steadicam before, I can't argue with anything any one will say, but I'm pretty sure I'll be using it with just the Arm hard mounted on wills.

Ciao

Weight is not nearly as much of an issue as balance with a lens like the 18-85. The internal mechanics move lens elements forward and back to compensate for breathing and focus. Add to that the lens being so long and you have a major cantilevering balance problem. It is pretty much impossible to balance a lens like that properly for steady work and the majority of experienced steady ops will not want to do it.

Well Finner, now you are telling me far more details that the Operator at NAB told me, as I said before not been an Operator, I can't understand all that goes in to, and what those or those not, work for a steadicam operation.

What I know is that no matter what, I'll be testing all the gear in all solutions possible before my shoots, so to know ahed of time, what can or can't be done.

ciao

Well ... I want several sets YESTERDAY. I have over $650,000 worth of lenese rented on various Red jobs as of today.

But I gotta tell ya - I wanted PERFECTLY MATCHED SETS. I think RED is in for a world of hurt selling these primes individually while other's are not even ready. To me, sounds like a foolish move.

My 2 cents.

Is that really such a big deal with RAW Mark? I have a set of standard speeds and I can barely tell them apart from my Cooke 10:1 in post, even though the Cook is noticeably warmer. The Red primes should match fine, Nikon and Canon seem to be able to do it.
