Normally I would go for max RAM, but that has never paid off.

I need a new laptop with Final Cut installed by Friday. Getting a macbook Pro 17" with a 250 gig Solid state drive. I could save a thousand bucks by not getting 8 Gigs of RAM. Final cut won't use it, Premiere and After Effects won't use it.

What are your thoughts? Can I live without that RAM?

I have the same...'cept I have the 500GB 7200rpm hard disk.

Works very speedy with HDV footage (while having an array of Adobe programs and FCS programs opened). :emote_hippie:

Michael,

Save the grand. If you wind up needing more horsepower, its better off to put that extra $$$ towards a Mac Pro tower where you can leverage more power than to spend on pricey RAM on a machine that can't be upgraded any further.

On a Mac Pro, you can add multiple SSD's, add a more powerful graphics card later, and add way more RAM than 8 GB when you really need it down the road. However, the upgrade options on the MacBook Pro are much more limited.

Already have a Mac Pro with a caldigit RAID and five 1 TB drives.

I need mobility. I came across a good deal for a 2.93 GHz Macbook Pro with 8 Gigs of RAM and a 500 Gig drive instead of the Solid State drive I wanted. 2600.00. I love getting a deal. Didn't think I would find one on a Mac. Yay!

I'm-a gonna be mobile! Whoo Hoo!

Thanks for all the input, everybody!

One thing to consider about buying a laptop is that you will get REAMED on the cost of RAM.

My general rule of has been to buy laptops with the minimum RAM possible, then turn around and order the most possible from Crucial.com. Crucial sells Micron, which is the same brand of RAM Apple uses, and they sell it for like 20% of Apple's prices.

Getting at the RAM to upgrade is a bit of a pain on the new MBPs (You have to remove the entire bottom panel, as opposed to a dedicated hatch like the old ones) but I'd say the cost savings are worth it. Just make sure you buy from a good company (Crucial, Corsair) and not no-name value RAM.

Nope. I mean 20% *of* Apple's price. At least the last time I ordered from Crucial, they charged me $150 for a RAM kit Apple wanted $600 plus for.

They must have been having a great sale...unless I am just missing it.

Hrm... You would appear to be correct. Last time I checked was with the previous generation MBP. Got 4GB (2x2GB) for something in the $120-150 range.

Prices on current gen MBPs aren't so attractive. 8GB for $800. Still better than the Apple price of $1200.
