  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Order- / production update RAVEN

I just got an email from my Bombsquad Rep and this is what he said.."As far as the RAVENs go, right now we're looking at a SPRING 2017 allocation due to the high demand for the DRAGON sensor."

I ordered my Raven on April 21 2016 and had been told I'd have it by Fall 2016 up until today. So it'll be about a year from order to in hands for me it looks like.

Maybe this update will help others figure out their own timeframe for getting allocated.

Wow. I wonder how many deposits they are sitting on. Used to be a way for production to make some interest.. Hmmm..

How do you know that none of shipped since late September?

If you look at the Raven Put Together queue (that I've taken over for the time being) you'll see that direct RED allocations stopped after 09-21-2016 as the next people on the list still have not received allocation emails from RED. Now, it does seem that dealers are receiving Ravens currently but as for RED pre-orders themselves, it has stopped.

Side note, even though I list my location as Seattle, I'm actually in Sammamish so "hi neighbor!"

I'll put a note down on the list that you've still not gotten your camera (thought you got yours). This points to even more proof that Raven pre-orders direct from RED have halted if you've been allocated since end of September with still no camera!

Sorry I don't understand what you mean. Can you please clarify what you meant in this statement?
Thanks Richard

Essentially if RED posted a probable delivery date, historically it would unwise to build your action plan around that date. The smarter approach is to continue to hunt and dig for revenue apart from expecting a 'soon' delivery was the gist of my suggestion. Whatever variable is happening or creating delivery gridlock, has been persistant and continues to be so. Someone is goobling up all available inventory or RED is retooling the pipeline.

It's also entirely plausible that between now and NAB , RED could theoretically make amother dynamic announcement that could monkey wrench pending orders even further. 'Basically, A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush'. Essentially, RED delivery dates are meaningless unless, the neighbor in front or behind you are getting cameras in windfall. Counsel is to continue to show copious amounts of patience, but in the meantime pursue selfish agenda.

It has obviously been slow. :) There is at least one person, maybe he is not on your list, that mentions receiving one in October.

BTW, not busting your chops or anything. I know it seems to be moving slow, just trying to show the line is moving so you all feel better about it. :) The wait is worth it. If Red teaches us anything, it is the art of patience. I waited for the RED ONE, EPIC, Weapon and now VV. Even with all the practice, its still difficult. :)

Have you met with any other RUs in the Seattle area? I know several. Keep meaning to plan a get together. Wanted to go to JAKs last year, but I never got around to organizing it. To be clear, I went to JAKs! I just did not bring anyone else with me. LOL Is this your first RED camera? If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I am usually a TA at the December Reducation. Both Gavin and I were TAs at the one and only Seattle class. Ivan and Justin were the insructors for that class. Had a really cool car to shoot. Its always fun to meet, and hangout, with people that have the same interest / passion.

Hoping to setup something in January for the folks in Seattle. Maybe a camera meet and HDR (playback) demo all wrapped up in one with some Pagliacci pizza.

Red has only done a delivery date once and that was with the RED ONE. They actually provided a list broken down by month. They were shipping around 500 cameras a month back in early 2008. This was all new cameras so no upgrades to deal with. Raven is new only as well. With EPIC I think they learned the hard way that not everyone will send their camera in for upgrades as soon as their number is called. This really through a wrench into the schedule and they can't predict that. Then of course they have to inspect the incoming camera. If there is anything wrong, it needs to be repaired first. All of this really slows things down.

I am surprised it has taken Red this long to switch to selling new cameras on day one along with upgrades. Vs. Upgrades first. As an existing customer, who is upgrading, I greatly appreciated the upgrade first approach. As a business, I fully get the sell new cameras first approach. I remember when Meridian Audio did this years ago with the 800 series. Far fewer people complained on RU than they did on the Meridian forum. I am really surprised by that given how much people like to complain on RU sometimes. haha

I'm willing to bet the person in that thread got his Raven from a dealer, but I just asked him to make sure. I'm not upset at RED or anything like that - I'm fine waiting but the lack of any allocation update is just frustrating.

I've not met up with any RUs as of yet - and yes, this will be my first RED camera! I did briefly own a RED Scarlet back in the day (for a week) but the fan noise was a deal breaker and had to sell it. I've been shooting 4K H.265 for a few years now with the Samsung NX1 (and some other 4K work with the Blackmagic cams) but finally decided to get a Raven as my top-end cam for projects that can justify it.

I ordered a RAVEN first week and received few months back. What has happened since September I cannot say though.

Thanks for explaining your first post and yes you are right, I need to "show copious amounts of patience" as it has been a 11 month wait so far. You are also correct that I need to chase work regardless of what camera I have. Cheers

I'd love to attend a Seattle meet up. I'm up in Bellingham

For some, the extra wait time may translate to having more discretionary means to select a different camera in the RED product line without sacrificing queue position.

Stacey made an excellent suggestion, that networking with existing owners is another option if needing urgent access to a camera package.

I don't want to derail this thread, so I created a new thread for a WA get together.

You just need to build the trust and this can work well. The week I received my EPIC-M Dragon upgrade I let Ivan Agerton take it to Australia for location scouting. I know and trust Ivan otherwise I would not have done it. This was back when Dragon was new and I was near the front of the line. I probably had the first Dragon in the PNW.
