As promised in the group buy thread.

Where: Civic Center park in Irvine, which will have a restroom - exact location.
When: Saturday 3/9/13, afternoon.

I was one of the first people to pickup the ebay "Came" stabilizer for approx $1300 USD shipped. Based on this thread.

To date I've used the rig on several small budget shoot days and I'm getting better each day. Now... I'm considering upgrading to the group buy model for the adjustable socket block.

Late next week I have some time off, so I'm thinking Friday mid-afternoon. I'll have the rig built with a Scarlet, Tokina 11-16, Dionic power and TV Logic 5.6. In this config sled weight is 22.5lbs with spring tension set between lowest and approx 40%, based on desired neutral lens height.

Since I'm solo w one rig, I need to keep the group to approx 8-10 people. Please email me at david_winters at mac dot com if you want to attend and try out. I'm on set all week so may be a bit slow to respond.

NOTE: I'm not a dealer, I have nothing to sell, just attempting to give back to the RU community. I've learned a lot on this forum.

If anyone else can attend with a stabilizer, that would be great. We can build two different setups and compare notes, pros / cons.

Email sent :D In on the group buy and looking forward to checking the rig out in person!

Dave - Love to see the rig. I will tell some friends who may be interested. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for me!) I am off to Hawaii on Saturday so perhaps we can connect in a few weeks and I can try it out. Maybe we can catch up over lunch - my treat. On behalf of the OC Red Community - THANKS!

Finalized meet date/time/location:

3:00, this Saturday 2/9 @ Civic Center Park in Irvine.

Two rigs will be there:
Laing/Scarlet: David Winters setup
Proline/Red1: Proline will bring their setup, and we’ll mount my R1 on there, and try a light and a heavy config...

I’ll be filming the whole thing, being sure to capture and compare a lot of the things brought up in the thread. If any RedUsers had any specific requests/tests or things to document on the rigs, please let me know (either on this thread or via PM) and I’ll be sure to cover it…

Edit - too many steadi threads. Moved post to other thread.

Hope to see some of you on Saturday.

Exciting! Would you guys be willing to attempt to fly the red one on the Laing so we can see how well it works (or doesnt work)?

Thanks!

If there is time sure. The key will be getting the battery power on the base vs on camera. I don't think we will have the proper power cables to power the R1. My scarlet, 18mm RPP, MB20 and two Dionics is approx 34lbs on the arm, which is a bit too heavy for the Laing arm. I flew the RPP for a few shots, but the arm was maxed out, resting at approx center postion. With a single Dionic and clip on MB it should be ok with Scarlet + RPP.

Proline demo today was excellent. Thank you Nick and Erick for making it happen. Nick is working on a highlight reel.

Thanks David, Anxiously awaiting everyone's thought on the Rig from your demo. Thanks to you and everyone else for taking the time to demo it today.

I'm not a Steadicam operator but I was at the test today. I was very impressed with the construction and overall look of the Proline system. We had a side by side with the Proline and the Laing system. I know there will be some footage showing up shortly showing both Systems and interviews with the owners and any mods made to their rigs. I played with the Laing carrying a Scarlet and it felt really good. The Proline had a Red One mounted on it. The Laing/Scarlet rig weighed in at 21lbs and the Proline/RedOne rig was a hefty 48lbs. I had to bail so i didn't get the chance to try the Proline but it looked like loads of fun.

Thanks Dave and Nick for getting this together.

Good to hear your report Dave. I'm super keen to read a first hand account of the PROline and see how it held up with such a decent weight on it.
Thanks to all that made it out there, for those of us that couldn't. Keep the feedback coming :)

Clips below are from the Laing-Scarlet setup, 24 and 16mm lenses, documentary style. The Proline will take a much higher payload, in this case flying 48lbs vs 21lbs on my Laing.

Setting aside all the specs, the big take away for me was operating skill is the largest variable. I'm months of practice away from being considered a for-hire operator.

Thanks David and others for doing this test. I have a Red One so the ProLine is my only option in terms of payload.

Based on the "CAME" ebay model I purchased January 2013, I would say yes, R1 is too heavy for the CAME/Laing. However, a fully stripped R1 should be ok for the Laing. Stripped=body & small lens, screw on filters, motor/receiver. Nothing else, no rods, dovetail, top handle, external raid/RAM, mattebox, on-camera battery.

The Proline is rated up to 45lbs, and we were ok at 48lbs. So, there is a lot more flexibility with the Proline.

There is a significant physical difference between 21lbs and 48lbs. I can wear 21lbs for 30-45 minute sessions without getting too tired. At 48lbs I need to dock every 5-10 minutes.

Why is he walking Backward with baby (lol- juz' jokin')

Great test

looking good! I'd love to see some video of you in action with that Laing rig David, it looks like that might fit my needs just as well with a scarlet. I have to weigh my rig now...

Edit: Just weighed it, follow focus w/ arm for receiver, WC Easy Riser w/ rods, 15 mm mattebox, Monitor w/ arm, Brain, WC Top Handle and Top Plate, Memory Card, Tokina 11-16 (Canon Mount) and Vmount battery on the camera weighs 20lbs. If the battery is on the bottom of the sled it's sitting at 16 lbs. If I REALLY wanted to slim it down I could take the battery plate off the back too, but I probably won't. That's a pretty achievable weight for Steadicam rigs. Only thing I might be inclined to add is a paralinx or other wireless video transmitter but that's negligible in terms of weight. And some ND filters.. again not an issue.
