Saw the lens mounted on a Red One. My impressions of it are it seems to be a very sharp lens, small, about half the size of the Red 18-85mm. Price: $19,995.00. So the choice appears to be, do you want an Angenieux name, quality, smaller size and shorter focal lengths to an upstart Red lens that is twice the size, yet half the price.

$19,995 for one lens? Can it really make that much difference? Would anyone here be able to tell the difference between footage shot with this lens and footage shot with the Red 18-85mm when both are available?

I really do want to know, not just being contrary. Is there something I don't understand about why these lenses cost so much more and how that really matters on a set? Please give specific situational examples if possible.

You won't see the difference 90% of the time, but the other 10% make it worth while. Also the serviceability will probably be very good, which will matter 5 or 10 years down the road.

Arri , Cooke and Angenieux lenses are buit in very limited quantities and the development in glass is quite expensive, this makes them expensive (and if course they want also some profit ;)) 20k for an Optimo lense is quite cheap compared to the "standard" optimo which is arround 45.000 EUR list.

I´d guess the rouge is aiming for larger quantities and so do the Red Lenses, which makes them a lot cheaper. Demand for 35mm Cine lenses was never that high as now.

It can make a huge difference. But 30mm at the wide end really makes me wonder if it's worth it...

Remember that this lens will only work with digital cameras such as the red and d20 and not 35mm film cameras. The flange is extra long unlike I've ever seen before. I'm not to crazy about the focal lengths even though the rep said that they are hoping to release a brother in the range of 16 to 35 depending on rouge sales. I can't remember exactly but somewhere around there. Very light weight and compact.
