  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Optimo Lens Circles

I guess what I don't understand is why everyone is excited about a lens system that covers a 32mm image circle for a 5K camera, when it is plainly evident to me (and a lot of other people) that the 5K Epic-X is just a way-station on the road to the 6K Monstro FF35 chip. Thus, unless one has almost unlimited piles of cash, purchasing any lens for a 5K system that has two full stops less of dynamic range than the FF35 seems a bit illogical to me.

Or am I missing something? (Hardly for the first time.)

Stephen
IMHO the 5K is the more cine-like of the new formats. Talking about the DOF and thinking about the FOV (in relationship with focals).
I leave you easly with the FF35, I take the S35 for me.

P.S.

Nice Evin, very nice... Thanks (Uoops it's about the other thread, the Ruby's one)

Hey, I've been one of the most vocal advocates for a S35 Monstro chip. . . but I don't think that's in the cards.

I hope that Evin is right about the dynamic range issue. I was almost certain that Mysterium X is supposed to have one more stop than RED One, and two stops less than Epic Monstro, but maybe that has changed. At 5K with two more stops than the RED One (if that's what it really has!), I'm certain that that's the direction I'd head with, at least one if not both, of our cameras.

I really don't want a narrower depth of field than the RED One. I like the soup just the way it is, thank you. Any narrower and I'll never get a shot in focus.

About a month ago, I did a close-up dolly-in shot of a piece of newspaper using a Nikon 105mm lens. To get close enough in to get the shot I wanted, I had to use all three of my Nikon extension tubes. In addition, because of all the tubes, I lost a lot of light, so I had to shoot it wide open. I had a depth of field of about one millimeter! I would have loved a lot more, but the shot worked really, really well in the end. And it only took me something like 20 tries to get it right.

I don't know when they dumped the stops data from the Epic/Scarlet information, but I just checked, and it's not there anymore.

Alas. . . I guess we'll find out what it is when we see it with our own two eyes.

The one thing that seems clear right now is that the Monstro is supposed to be 14-bit AD versus 12-bit AD for the Mysterium-X. That might be an enormous difference in image quality.
