I'm looking for an all around medium range zoom and was sold on the optimo 30-80, but of course, could not get it right away. Now I am wondering if the Canon 30-105 might be a better choice, because it does have a bit more tele range and it may cover the Dragon sensor better? I am shooting on an Epic. Anyone here use the Canon yet?

How much is the Canon 30-105? Rouge DP's are 19-24k with the current market and people love them here on RU.

I did some tests with the 30-105 last week on a C300. I felt as if it did not fully hold up to Canon primes or Zeiss CP.2s and I'm not a very big fan of the CP.2s. It was significantly softer then either of those lenses and it's heavy as can be.

I have a optimo 30-80 for sale if anybody is interested.

Anyone know if the Optimo will fully cover the Dragon?

We can't really tell till there are Dragons out there to test, it does cover the Epic at full 5K so chances are good. I love my two DP Optimos, they look much more cinematic than the Canon or Fujinon (Alura) lenses IMHO.

Frederic,

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check out the Alura. Is this Fujinon glass? I'd love to hear a few reason why you like it so much more than the DP rouge.

Thanks.

Might I add the ALURA 30-80 to your list ? 26k and it is a fantastic lens . I prefer it to the Optimo 30-80. I wanted the Optimo then tried the Alura and was sold on the spot.

Evin,

Your in LA right? Do you rent your glass? Looking to do an afternoon shoot / test in the near future.

To each their own. I have to agree with Evin, the Optimo DP's have a more cinematic feel to them. And they're such a nice size and weight. This is my go-to lens kit for most everything.

Isn't the Rouge just a cheaper version of their forty thousand dollar glass?

Jeff,

I'd really like to see what you guys are talking about. Did you get any footage links up yet?

Do you rent the set Jeff?

We represent all of these lenses so I don't particularly have a horse in this race. Kyle, I don't know what you were seeing when you tested that Canon 30-105, but in my experience it is in fact a very high resolving lens -- rivaling some primes. I think the Canon offerings are right up there with the others, surpassing some.

The Optimos are on a long backorder, but Angenieux is working to catch up. We can supply new Alura or Canon lenses quickly.

Will, I'm trying to get some shots I can share. I know it's taking forever, but will let you know.

I rarely rent my gear and usually just to a few select people in my area that I work with on occasion. There's a small group of us RED types here that help each other out in that way. It would be much easier for you to rent them locally in CA. The cost of FedEx and extra insurance for the trip there and back would probably cost the same as a day or two of rental. I don't know about out there, but these lenses rent here locally for $275/day each or about $525/day for the pair. I know because I rented them a bunch while I was waiting for mine to come in. So far, I'm the only one to use mine and I'm hoping to keep it that way! I'll get something posted soon.
