Anyone used an Optimo 17- 80?

We've just bought one and the distortion is unacceptable in my opinion. Has anyone used one and noticed this? could it be unique to our lens?

I really do not think that Angenieux would engineer something so optically shoddy.

Any experiences/anecdotes would be greatly appreciated.

I'd think if were to spend $60k on a lens I would become intimately familiar with it and absolutely love it...before I pay
But that's me...

I agree, but I don't get a say in things here, I'm just the kit room guy who has to deal with the fall out.

Jacek, have you seen one of these?

Timur, it's bleeding brand spanking new.

Distortion is the characteristic of the optical design, so unless something is wrong with the lens, they are like that. I've seen enough to know there is about 2% distortion.
Is there any special reason why you think it's not acceptable?
This lens is considered the pinnacle of zoom design with better than primes resolution and nearly equal speed....

Well... it is french.... ;)

Gives you appreciation for how amazing the Alura is.

Sorry that it isnt performing. The 15-40 and the 45-120 are absolutly spectacular however. especially the 45-120, it may be one of my favorite lenses ever.

I assure you Alura is nowhere near the 17-80 in most performance aspects.
Neither is the 15-40 (45-120 probably either-haven't seen it).
I've projected them many times...

I am finishing a feature where we used the 17-80 as our "A" camera lens. there is considerable portholing and stop-loss at longer focal lengths. It is noticeable after 50mm. There is a 1/3 stop loss of light around the edges of frame and it is especially frustrating on night exteriors.

I have not seen this issue with the "DP" lenses.

The Optimo 17-80 has always been the weakist of the optimo lineup. The 15-45 is next then the top of the bunch is still the 24-290. The 17-80 is great for shooting people, but I've used it a few times for more architectural shooting and it was a mistake. Lots of port-holing and barrel distortion. The Red 18-85 RED is at least 90% as good for 1/6 the price.

So whats up with Alura ? it looks an attractive lens but I've not seen one ?

From what I have seen it projection Alura is mediocre by today standards. Big/heavy, not as fast, from what I've heard about the mechanics - longevity may be questionable...
The last one is a hearsay, it may prove me wrong, but these days I'm usually right....

I would consier this an unfair characterization of the Alura 18-80.

If you really want the best zoom possible in this focal range, the Fuji 18-85 T2 is without peer. It's almost like having a set of primes.

Agree completely. Nothing out there compares to this lens.

Jacek, have you projected this 18-85 at all?

How different from the alura is it?

Seems like this thread is fairly old, but just to put this out there: what is the cinematographers favorite Optimo lens? The 24-290? Is this the one most rented?

I'm thinking the T2.0 Fujinon version.... not the T2.6 Fujinon. The good one. Perhaps thats not the "alura".

There is a huge difference between the Fuji Aluras and the Fuji Premier PL zooms. The Premiers are some of the finest lenses ever built, period.
