Just wanted to see what people prefer and why. I'm leaning towards the REDmote because a.) I'm not confident in REDvolt runtime vs. charging time (so I probably won't be using them), b.) I like the idea of being able to control the camera somewhat remotely, and c.) REDmote is almost half the price and does the same thing (I could be wrong here, which is why I'm looking for opinions).

My concerns are that the REDmote doesn't function as well as the side-handle and/or the form-factor supplied by the side-handle is too great to be ignored (plus, it's always nice to have options and I may end up loving REDvolts for their simplicity).

Get the Side Handle and a couple of RedVolts with a charger. It's just a much nicer way to control the camera in general in my opinion. Just use the RedVolts to power the camera while you're swapping out your bricks. It effectively makes the bricks hot swappable.

The RedMote is nice, but to me the Side Handle feels pretty damn essential for anyone with an Epic or Scarlet.

I do not have a redmote but I'll offer my opinions on the side handle and redvolts. I have the side handle and although I do like the form factor it offers, its not as comfortable to me as grips on other cameras. I think I may have a weird shaped thumb or something because I can not hit all the buttons easily while holding it like many other people seem to be able to do. However, I do love having a handle on that side that has some functionality to it other than just putting a standard handle off the top or from rails.

The Redvolt is not something that should be ignored either. If you are going to be using any professional mounted battery solution, you are eventually going to want to change those batteries. Having a redvolt in the side handle will allow you to not have to power down the camera in order to change that battery. Additionally, having the option to run the camera on a smaller light battery might come in handy down the line if you need to rig up as light as possible on a jib, or on a run and gun tripod, etc.

I would definitely go Side Handle, but at this time, I don't know what its like to use a Redmote so take what I say as only one side of the argument.

Hi guys, how much essential is the Red pro 5' screen touch to control the camera? If I've the DSMC side handle ,and the Red mote, is there any after market LCD available similar to the Red touch pro to cut down the cost? With limited budget I am planning the package for my Red Scarlet. Thanks

I would get the Redmote because the Scarlet tactical cage and other accessories won't work if you have the side handle installed. Having the side handle installed limits the ability to mount other stuff. Plus, having the control to run the Scarlet in your hand from anywhere is much better than having to be next to the camera all the time.

My LCD touch is down right now, so I am just running an HDMI monitor and controlling it with the Redmote in the meantime. Works great actually. Good low-budget solution, but the Touch LCD is definitely nice.

I'm still a bit surprised so many love the side handle. I agree that the form factor and self-contained power system design with the side handle could be useful in certain situations if you can justify the cost, but are people actually holding the camera from the side handle? Holding the side handle makes sense for stills if you dont mind the weight of the camera for sporadic use, but it seems it would generally be far too unstable and tiring to hold the camera by the side handle out in front of you for most motion picture purposes. It's pretty ineffective shooting video on DSLRs in that way so I would think it would only be less effective in a camera that weighs 4times as much.

I may be biased since I only have a redmote and am quite happy so far with its functionality since it gives more control options at half the size and cost of a side handle, and will be more so when wireless functionality is more stable.

I'm having a hard time deciding between a REDtouch and an ATOMOS samurai; the Touch would obviously be great as a control interface and monitoring powered off the camera, but the direct to 1080p ProRes of the Samurai would save a lot of hassle for non-mission critical jobs.

Anyone know how much longer redvolts last when they aren't powering a RED Touch 5.0?

Touch LCD is definitely nice , so is the DSMC side handle but overpriced. I am glad to know that your Redmote is working great. Although I read quite a lot about the wireless instability of the Redmote on other threads. Given the choices at the moment I'll go with the Touch LCD and DSMC. Thanks

The Redmote is fairly useless as a remote right now. Maybe it will become more reliable with firmware upgrades, but in my experience it seems to only work consistently when mounted on the back of the camera, which makes it difficult to mount v-mount batteries. I use redvolts exclusively and love the tiny form factor, so the side handle is indispensable to me.

I have both and I'm in love with both of them. First of all, I think it's wonderfully intuitive to go back and forth between the two. The Redmote is what I use most often because you don't strain you back when you're flipping through menus, setting up the camera, dialing in a look, etc. While actually shooting, the Side Handle's record button is always the one I use, it's helpful as another point of contact during handheld, the ability to set different hot keys between the two so you've got extra button based functionality is amazing... I just got the Side Handle and it's already blowing me away. The RedVolt thing is nice, but def. not high on my list of reasons the Side Handle is amazing... it's just an insanely nice bonus feature for me.

I'm surprised by how much love I'm seeing for the Redvolts here. In my experience, they drain too quickly to be incredibly useful on set.

Sidehandle opens up a box of new uses.

RedMote? What RedMote?

Agree with Eric, though - V-mounts are the way to go for longer on-set runs.
Still love the handle

What is the weight roughly of the epic with a run and gun setup and zoom lens?

What was the weight on a similar Red One system?

I'm about to get our Epic. Are Red One Bricks V mount? Do they work with the stage 3 modular adapter?
