Im awaiting my scarlet now, so I will soon be an owner. I currently own an HVX200a. I also shoot with a couple of DSLR's. I am considering buying another run and gun camera. I work all over the world, in very dangerous and hard to get to places. I need the best quality possible, but since I spent LOTS of money lately, I don't want to go crazy. I was thinking of the Af100, because I can use all of my still lenses that Im going to be using for my Scarlet, and I also get XLR inputs.

How feasible is it to bring my scarlet on trips to Africa to compliment an Af100 or some other Run and Gun. My thoughts are to get all of the long take, day to day, type footage with the Af100 and all of my beauty shots with the Scarlet.

Opinions? Thoughts?

I live / Have lived this life myself as well, and my thought is that it's very feasible. At the moment I use an XHA1 for long form recording, and my T2i for beauty / broll stuff.

Battery is always the problem with DSLR and more so with Scarlet. Until they update the firmware Scarlet the battery life is poop. SO maybe look at a v-lock or anton bauer battery option so you can shoot for a very long time.

And if you ever want a second camera operator / soon to be scarlet owner who is willing to travel to dangerous places, I am game.

scarlet can be configured as a pretty small camera, but the main concern when you're out there is power and media

A Scarlet with a PIX 240 is both of your cameras.

Solve the power issue and you can use the Pix to capture really high quality 1080p material, and the Scarlet's SSD for the "beauty shots"

The only downside to any of these arrangements is that your production is limited to 1080p.

I really hope Red introduces a 4K RGB codec in camera with a module. If I could simultaneously put a full resolution RGB codec to disk, well that would be nice. Maybe RedRay can do this, maybe ProRes, DNxHD, h.264 or CineForm ... just something.

There is just some stuff I wish I could push in a 256 SSD and just let it record for hours on end - so long as I can give it power.

Which brings me back to the power issue. There are some systems out there that allow you to mount two ENG batteries simultaneously and hot swap one at a time, effectively giving continuous power so long as your battery supply lasts. Anton Bauer makes one ... there is at least one other with a V lock battery system. Some of these can be configured with multiple power taps so you can can run your whole rig off of them.

Scarlet and Epic may be very light ... and RedVolts are very advanced, but sometimes you just need to have lots of available power.

I spent the summer in China working on a documentary and did kind of the same thing... used anEX3 for the long format stuff and got all the beauty shots with a pair of 5d's. Its kind of a hassle trying to match the footage and using 2 separate workflows, but i feel as if the endless possibilities of scarlet will make those issues go away. I think it is a great work around/trade off to have the ability of pretty good looking long format footage and great beauty shots/broll.

Alexander, with an external recording setup like the PIX 240, does the Scarlet's fan turn off while the PIX 240 is recording like it does when the cam records to the SSD? I'm asking for audio reasons, something like this would be a golden setup for me at times that i want 1080p with the 4K (1.6x) crop but don't have time to downconvert in post.

I think the fans only turn off when recording internally.. so i do not believe they would turn off if you were only recording to the pix 240. I could be wrong though

right on. why drag 2 complete camera systems with diff lenses, power needs, media, etc...? That's not Run & Gun, it's Drag & Grunt.
THIS kind of option makes Scarlet rock.

Agreed. If you're run and gun, a good zoom will save you. You will also want to figure out your filtration and what are the steps you'll have to do in order to achieve your desired f stop. You don't want to change lenses and filters when you've got seconds to shoot something - I did that shooting crime scenes in Juarez. Good zoom and a good filtration process is important for speed.

Personally, I can't call anything with multiple lenses "Run and Gun." If you still want the large sensor look get a good zoom.
