Hi there folks!

I would greatly appreciate any opinion/constructive criticism on the cinematography of this two teasers/ trailers of short films I`ve DPed:

https://vimeo.com/117067397 ("O Homem do Saco" translates to "The Bag Man" wich is an urban legend similar to the boogie man)

https://vimeo.com/125314365 ("A Última Página" translates to "The Last Page")

Both were shot on Epic MX at 5K.

Huge thanks!

Excellent work. I think the lighting is great, but since I prefer a less saturated and lower contrast image,
I find the grade too saturated and too contrasty, but the look, and style, and lighting is excellent.

Looking good. I watched both a couple of times trying to compare the zeiss zf vs the sigma. Are you using some filtration on both edits? The zf have a nice smooth tone to them. I'm assuming by sigma you are using the art series lenses in the second video?

Hello!

Martin, thanks for the compliment, I apreciate. I might agree with you that "The Bag Man" might be a little over saturated and over contrasted. I was trying to achieve the same look on the short film on the begining of "A Serious Man" and graded with some frames of reference from that, but I might have exagerated a little bit. I really like were the grade on "The Last Page" is tough. I was trying to give the footage an oil painting look. Neither of this short movies are finished yet (that's why i`ve edited myself these teasers, so I could showcase my work to new directors), so i might revisit the grade at some point. I live in Brazil, and here, most stuff is finished with a low contrast and low saturated look that I've grown to dislike, so I try to escape that.

Nick, thanks! Would you care to elaborate what would you say is naturalistic about my work? I find it interesting that you say that, for I myself don't see it that way (at least, not in this two particular pieces), and would love to hear more about your point of view!

Brandon, thanks! The sigma I used on "The Last Page" is not from the art series, it is the old 24-70 sigma zoom. I find the zeiss ZF to have a ery distinctive (and yet modern) look that sometimes I love, and sometimes I think they scream "Zeiss ZF". The sigma had a lower resolving power and lower contrast then the ZFs, but somehow had a more neutral look, that I thought would help me achieve this "oil painting" look I was after on "The Last Page". I did not had access to PL glass, since both these short films were no budget projects, and had to use my personal lenses. I did not use any filtration on the lenses on any of them, but there is one shot on "The Bag Man" in wich I used smoke (the one where the boy stands from the chair he's reading a comic book and turn down the lamp) . That was the first take we shot, but I realized that using smoke was not going to be practical and decided to abort it, but it remained on that particular shot.

The use of natural light, handheld/moving camera, felt pretty natural/doc to me, which I liked...

Thanks, Nick! Sorry it took me long to reply, I was offline working. The fact is, there's no handheld in any of these ttrailers, what looks like handheld, it's actually a chinese gimbal that the director had bought for cheap, and didn't really work. Also, I've only used natural light on the exterior shots, all the interior shots on "O Homem do Saco" (the first one) were shot at night. I felt I would have more control that way, because we shot it only on the weekends, during the course of several weeks (due to schedule limitations). On the "A Última Página" even though the interior shots were shot during day time, they are very heavily lit, with the use of a 5K fresnell most of the time.

Boa Rodrigo! Fino!!
Congrats Pal
